i keep forgetting that the line between smart and dumb is the same as perfection and incompetency
I would argue signing Suter and Dumba are prime examples of incompetency. They were bad moves from the moment the pen touched paper, everyone knew they were, except the guy that did it.

There's plenty of Nill moves that we could argue were also dumb moves, most of which would have a defendable justification for being made when he did it.

Suter and Dumba are just 100% undefendable moves, I don't care how big of a Nill homer someone is, there is 0 justification for such horrendous moves

Nobody likes the moves, but it just doesn’t give you the leg to stand on with this opinion that you think it does. Nill is one of the most highly regarded executives in the league, full stop. He brought in Seguin for pennies on the dollar, signed elite free agents in Radulov and Duchene, built the staff around him that scouted Miro, Oettinger, Hintz, Robertson, Wyatt, Bourque, Harley, Stankoven, and Bichsel. We’ve been a contender for years now and will be contenders for the foreseeable future.

I could go on and on about Nill’s successes with this team. most people in the league have the opinion that Jim Nill is one of the very best, if not the best executive in the league and that Dallas does everything the right way. You however are the only one that seems to think he’s dumb and a garbage GM.

My old man told me once that if you think the whole world is full of shit, it’s probably you that’s full of shit.

Damn. You bitch more than I do and that's saying something.

M88K's issue is even when Nill does something good he still finds a way to shit on him.

Annoying after a while.

GMs are allowed to make a few bad signings. It happens. Guys don’t pan out like you think. Dumba was one of those. But I couldn’t see Nill ever moving a top 3 guy in the league. That’s like Toronto trading Matthews for Doughty or Edmonton trading Draisaitl for doughty. The utter meltdown in Toronto or Edmonton would be insane.

Nill is a good GM. Harrison is not. You never move Luka and yes I’m still pissed.

They aren't moves of incompetence, they were economic moves in the NHL.

He needed a veteran for the back end to eat big minutes and not be total garbage, and Suter was there.

He needed two RHD under 7m combined without term... well he got what was available. He wasn't going to commit to the Tanev or Walker term. He couldn't afford Roy or Pesce and a second guy. Everyone else was garbage and he needed a body.

He is constrained by many things and he did what he thought was the most correct, even though it turns out that Dumba is struggling. Unfortunately that is also Nill's weakness, reclamation projects.

Now the big problem is that Boosh is possibly injured, and now he's down to Ceci and Dumba and whatever AHL tweeners he has in the organization.

Nill will have to do something insane and probably sub-optimal, and I'd probably just find a way to trade Dumba and an asset for Trouba.

The Suter signing was a good move and it buying him out turned out the be a HUGE mistake. Not that I blame Nill though, he was getting up there in age and thought he could sign someone better.

For those who've been waiting: the victory+ app is now on Samsung TVs.

Suter wasn't terrible and his cap hit wasn't bad. Term was alittle too long, but that helped lower the cap. Problem was when his ice time was too high, he struggled. When his ice time was lowered he wasn't that bad.
Coaches couldn't stop themselves from overplaying Suter. This was partly why Minnesota had to buy him out.

Signing Suter also might have played a role in Pavelski hanging on as long as he did.
