Was it even a practice? The first quote implies the players were on the ice already as he was walking into the building.. doesn't seem like much of a practice and more a free skate for the single guys who don't want to sit at home alone.

If DeBoer costs you a draft pick through incompetence/ignorance of the rules he has to be gone.

PDB has to be aware of the rule. Nill has to be aware of the ice time being scheduled. What a weird scenario. Or maybe as we are seeing with Spott, they are just that oblivious

When DeBoer gives the wink about it not being optional for the rookies, it becomes an official practice.

Yeah, they are crapping the bed right now. However, every year we predict the Central will be a shootout until the final week. Last year was the one where we emerged on top, but did we really expect that to be the norm? I think at this point last season, we were just above the playoff line until they got hot near the end.

Every year, even if a team looks similar on paper, they play on the ice. Team chemistry has to be rebuilt each year, as there is little carry over, especially after a few very successful seasons. I could be wrong.

What a dumb rule. What clown put that in there? Who cares if a player skates during the break. I can understand organized practice being against the CBA but not being able to provide ice time is dumb. Change the rules NHL. Just stupid.

The rule is there because a coach like DeBoer will tell players the rink is open for optional practice knowing full well players will take it as an order to show up.

they can skate all they want, the NHL team can't provide the facility or "encourage" them to show up. It's to stop exactly what Deboer did "optional" mandatory practices

BREAKING: I am being told by Dallasman's sources that the complaint came from a N. Lundkvist, no, no, that's too obvious, sorry -- let's say a Nils L. -- who confided to the Players Association he felt his collectively bargained rights were being infringed upon. More to follow.

It'll be a low 6 figure fine and no one will care about this again until PDB gets fired

No fine is coming, in fact reporters are now saying it was a 'Skate' not a 'Practice' and backtracking what they reported.

Players are free to do what they want in their free time, its no coincidence it was all young, single players who would rather hangout at the facility than sit at home alone. Players were on the ice before the head coach was in the building.

The only reason a fine is going to come is if the Stars skills coach or skating coach were potentially on the ice for the free skate. I feel like Nill wouldn't be this dumb though and the team just treated it like a Captains skate before the season starts.

I disagree. The rule exists for a good reason. The CBA mandates time off, and some coaches won't respect the time off.
My point is that it should not be a punishment nor should it be a rule. I get what you are saying about coaching trying to take advantage of players and I agree that happens. But an optional skate and open ice time should be allowed. It’s up to a player if they want to skate. I don’t think there needs to be a mandatory time off. If you want to better your game you should be allowed. If you want a rule keep coaches out and not the players, that’s my point.

It is something explicitly negotiated by players by their union. It is a protection against insane coaches. It's not the NHL it's the players. Do you think the league wants a break over the holidays it's a large commercial loss for the owners.

Shitting on this is just peasant shit. I want to work m'lord I'll be a good worker m'lord. Solidarity with any player that reported this shit. The fact deboer let on that for young players it isn't optional shows how toxic this shit is.

Honestly fire deboer for his comments alone.
