Been saying. Zegras for Peterson might happen
I wouldn't hate it but I wouldn't love it either. If Zegras rebounds next season and they sign him to a 8 year deal and then he gets hurt again a year later and starts not producing again they'll be stuck with him. Same goes with Petterson but his track record is a lot better and has playoff experience.

What if they move Carlsson to the wing of Petterson because he can't win faceoffs.

Carlsson has been much better at faceoffs lately. He’s going to be a long term center.

So, what if it’s Miller that they’re actually wanting to move?

That’d seem to be the intelligent thing to do.
I think Miller makes more sense for us but I also wouldn't want to give up one of our top 3 centers for Miller. Would we expect Miller to play C here or wing?

I don't want Miller or Pettersson. Both will cost way too much and don't make sense for the team composition. I don't think either is in the tier to push the big trade chips for.

Would rather throw money at Marner or Rantanen in the off-season. If it was someone on the Tkachuk or Tage Thompson tier, that's a different story. A game breaking offensive forward would be huge for this team.

My issue with Pettersson is mostly the cost

I do think if you get Pettersson, zegras is the guy going the other way(Pettersson is essentially what we hope zegras will be)…. But I don’t want to add our 1st to zegras.

Something like

Zegras/mctacish + 2nd + dioncicio/hinds

Is kinda where my mind is in terms of trade. If they want a center, mctavish and zegras are prob top 2 optiosn and maybe cozens

Not really interested in putting zegras or mctacish with our 1st, nor do I want to move lacomb, zellweger, Mintyukov, Luneau or solberg

Pettersson was underwhelming at least in last years playoffs. He is super expensive, costs "two Terry's" while essentially producing like Terry (don't just look at his one contract year 100p season).

Cost would be too much, it would mess up the team construction imo. Would like as a player, but pass given the situation.

I actually don’t know that it messes the team construction depending on cost.

It’s just like fast forwarding zegras to his prime if zegras is the big piece going the other way. I just don’t want to add 2 significant pieces to the trade.

I’ve went back and forth whether or not I think it’s a good idea to look at EP as a target.

I very slightly lean no but make no mistake if it happens, depending on return, I’ll find a way to be excited and probably pretty easily.

I have to think this is something Verbeek is pursuing. Anaheim has the center to be a piece in the deal, the prospects/young players to add and the picks. They have the salary cap space. They need the scoring. They could trade for EP and not have to attempt to convince him to come here like they would a free agent.

It makes too much sense

It does make a lot of sense in the ways you describe which is kind of what scares me.

The problem I have with Pettersson is there are serious questions about his compete level and work ethic which I tend to think would be the one thing steering Verbeek away as well. There shouldn’t be those kind of question marks on a 11+ mill per year player.

yes

We have enough small underperformers.

Zell has been performing but it’s all about upgrades
But we don’t know if they’re underperformers or even if EP would be an overall upgrade. It can’t be that we win a few games in improbable fashion and then declare the rebuild over just to dump some still-developing prospects for an even more expensive version of Terry.

I am not sure if giving Petersson his contract would be smart for us if we had him already, let alone pay a massive price to acquire him. That said, I highly doubt his current issues with the Canucks make him a guy Verbeek or Cronin see fit to break the bank for.

I’m open to the idea

He does fit a need, I’m just cautious about the cost…. He’s instantly our best forward and he’s in his prime

Gives us a legit top line center, in his prime in theory takes pressure off carlsson…. Also a good player to put with gauthier sennecke colangelo etc

Our first should 1000% be in play but top 3 lottery protected for this season, changes to unprotected 2026. Didn’t we recently learn that verbeek hasn’t drafted BA but has drafted for roster construction? Essentially, whoever we deal our first for. Becomes our best forward. Then we add carlsson+cutter+ sennecke+terry (Zegras/mac whichever one isn’t traded ) our top 6 is already accounted for. Then we have guys like killer/strome/vatrano( who most likely resigns ) who slot in better for 3rd line duties. While youngsters like colagenlo are ready for 4th line duties. Ideally we could package our first + zellwegger+colagenlo instead of someone like Zegras in a package deal for someone like Peterson. I’m not sure he’s the answer, as others have said tkachuk is the person I move heaven and earth for as well as ratenen in a sign and trade. Thompson too. But verbeek feels ready to make a significant deal to improve our team is the sense I’m getting
