I love that you went from intense Ten Hag apologist to "whatever Ten Hag's was" once he was no longer in the job.

"We've always been at war with Eastasia"
One man's apologist is another man's pessimist. And you will never find a bigger pessimist in sports than a Finn. First season it looked like there was a system but that lasted as long as his keyplayers Varane and Martinez were healthy.

Service is part of it, but my cousin (a United fan) recently argued to me that the underlying cause of the service issue is Hojlund's poor positioning. I'm inclined to agree.

A few stats to chew on, each of which follows from the previous:
- Hojlund's xG per shot is 94th percentile amongst strikers in Europe.
- Hojlund's shots/90 is in the 1st (!!!!!!) percentile amongst strikers in Europe.
- Hojlund receives 3.86 progressive passes/90, which is in the 6th percentile amongst strikers in Europe. This would support the claim that the problem is his service.
- But wait! Erling Haaland receives just as few progressive passes/90 (3.93)! Does Haaland also get no service?
- Of course not. Look at their touch maps. Hojlund takes more touches/90 than Haaland does (24.6 to 20.0), and they receive a similar amount of progressive passes, but Haaland has almost triple the amount of in-the-box touches as Hojlund (7.13 to 2.54). Over 1/3 of Haaland's touches are in the box, compared to 1/10 for Hojlund.
- What naturally follows from the difference in where they're receiving the ball? Haaland takes over 4x as many shots per 90 as Hojlund.

The thesis? Hojlund gets service, but because he's not positioning himself in dangerous areas he's not getting service that would lead to scoring opportunities. He barely shoots, as he's barely in a shooting position.
I would agree somewhat. I definitely think its both. He'd been playing a lot with Garnacho and Rashford, who lately would rather shoot from the touchline than pass the ball in an attacking position. I think, especially with Diallo becoming a focal part of the team, he should mesh well with Hojlund moving forwards.

But yeah Hojlund loves to get into the physical stuff with CB's which absolutely affects his position and ability to receive the ball in dangerous areas. But there's clearly a player there if he can get the right coaching and improve on his positioning/ability to get open.

United were a lot better after Rashford and Zirkzee went off. Hojlund and Mount had good impacts. Amad very good at times too.

Cherki already with goal + assist after 50 minutes against Frankfurt.

Correction 1+2 after 53 now.

Belgian clubs going 5-0 in Europe this week. Apparantly it was 35 years ago since that last happened.

Anderlecht doing so well in the Europa especially surprises me. They never seem impressive, even in the league, but they have gotten good results.

4-1 for Chelsea over Shamrock Rovers at HT, Marc Guiu hattrick. Think it would be wise to rest Cucurella for the 2nd half as he looks to have to play a lot during next matches.

He’s suspended on Saturday, he wouldn’t be playing today otherwise.

Ah, somehow I thought he already served the suspension.

Anyway, he has cut down the running on the left flank in the 2nd half, staying further up on the pitch and doesn't come back to defend on Chelsea's half (no need for that). Nice goal by him too, shooting with his weaker right foot, went in via the post.

Hertz shitting the bed against a team who average attendances similar to the top end of the Scottish third tier. Outstanding stuff.
