Honestly if not for Leo Carlsson… I feel like that might be 1 of our worst drafts in a while
The guys I wanted at 33 were Ritchie, Strbak, Nelson, Cristall, or Lardis.
I thought Lardis had the best chance at falling to our 2nd/3rd 2nd rounders, which he did, then we passed on him 3 more times....
Agreed this is probably the worst draft since like 2018, but there is still time.
I will say though, 2023 felt like the year they shifted in priority for later round picks. They clearly put more emphasis on 2-way hard working guys that will fill out the roster for the next 10 years. I have said it before, but Chicago and Tampa Bay were largely successful because they were able to surround their superstars with cheap guys that can play up and down the lineup. When Tampa Bay's depth started drying up they had to trade for these guys which really hurt their window:

In terms of absolute high level potential, sure. On flip side, Sidorov looks like he has top 6 potential, Clara has potential to be a #1, Terrance has 3rd line potential. Smith, Dionicio and Port are wildcards at this point.
Myatovic and Pitre are the only real disappointments so far IMO.
Seems clear Anaheim put an emphasis on two way character forwards in this draft, before taking some swings later on (Sidorov, Dionicio).
Would it be fun to draft all the high risk high reward skill forwards every year? Of course, but sometimes you need to draft those two way players too as they are going to be important down the track and more likely to play NHL games then the 15th skilled forward we draft.
On flip side we took some swings in 2024 on players who might have some untapped offensive potential (Procyszyn) or have high offensive potential but skating issues (Masse, Burnevik).
Always interesting to see undrafted players that coaches admire. There are some right shot forwards that can be interesting as UFAs. Can Landen Hookey be another Mark Kastelic?

Best shot and hardest shot went to Halttunen. I liked him a lot, though, he's got a lot of Kaliyev vibe of being PP specialist and nothing more.
Masse is 1+2 halfway through his game today.

I believe that puts Chicoutomi into the next round of the playoffs too.
I’m not worried about who we missed on. A lot of those prospects fizzle out in the nhl because as the game gets bigger, faster and with less space. Even worse in the playoffs. The teams that win cups have a blend of high end skill but are also extremely hard to play against, and that’s exactly what we are building.
