Prospect Update, Jan 20: NHL

Pretty much meh for our prospects.

Notes

Cutter's offense resurged and then the org moved Mac away from Cutter. For the past two games, Cutter's SOG is 2. Cutter needs better talent around him.

Nesterenko's defensive production looks better in the NHL than AHL. The same can be said of fellow AHL'er Helleson. What is going on in San Diego that makes our prospects not look good in San Diego, but more competent up at the NHL level?!

Despite a -4 +/- rating, Colangelo's Flashscore ratings in the past four games have been very positive.
  • Jan 9: 1g + 0a, -2 rating, 12:29 TOI, and Flashscore = 7.3 (green)
  • Jan 11: 0g + 0a, -1 rating, 10:55 TOI, and Flashscore = 6.5 (orange)
  • Jan 12: 0g + 0a, +0 rating, 14:26 TOI, and Flashscore = 7.3 (green)
  • Jan 14: 0g + 0a, =1 rating, 13:15 TOI, and Flashscore = 7.0 (green)
Helleson is on a three-man rotation between him, Minty, and Zell. Not ideal.

More Scoring Recently

Currently, the Gulls are 9th in the Pacific Division with 28 points (11-20-4-2 ... W-L-OTL-SOL). 8th place has 37 points with two games in hand. Not a lot of scoring, not great defense, and worse netminding is terrible combo.

The Gulls have put up 20 goals in the past five games. Unfortunately, they have allowed 20 goals to go 2-2-1 (5 pts). They have a 4.0 ppg rate in the past five games, but a 2.66 ppg rate in the previous 32 games. San Diego ranks 30th out of 32 AHL teams in GA with 136. They are tied for 22nd with 105 GF. What is a positive is they are missing several players, including two top scorers in C Harkins and AHL All-Star RW Colangelo due to NHL call-ups. Also called up are RD Helleson and forward Nesterenko. On the injured list are one of its top scorers in winger Sidorov, goalie Clang, and power forward type Jaxsen Wiebe.

Pastujov has had an amazing arc to his season. He was demoted to the ECHL to start the season. Became the Tulsa Oiler's leading scorer only 12 games by a large margin. Called up to the AHL club and has been on a scoring tear since. Without Harkins on the AHL club, Pastujov has the best ppg rate at 0.96 on the team.

EDIT: I revised the overall chart production to highlight injury or IR easier with red highlighting.

Is Siderov injured or has he been getting scratched?

Yeah saw that on the spreadsheet after I posted, whoops. Thanks!

That’s my bad I saw it after I had posted, thanks!

No problem. Your input helps. I throw up so much info that it can get overwhelming at times and easy to miss things. I've updated the chart to identify injures better and it does make it so much easier to see. Thanks for that.

It would be very surprising if he became an NHL regular. He's slight and has had major consistency issues.

But, he has obvious skill and has put together a really strong season, so maybe he is putting it all together. Certainly worth a swing considering our lack of forward skill.
I guess we find soon. We should be making a coaching change instead of this

This is based on scouting reports of people who do watch him. There are those in his draft thread on the prospects board if you would like to read for yourself. Not much of a reach anyhow.
There are only a few posts from 2023 and 2024, none of which provide any substantial analysis. One person wrote: “He was a really exciting prospect at one point, but there’s just not enough consistency or drive in his game when things don’t go well for him. This will probably end up being the best season of his career.”

It feels like you’re taking that single comment at face value and running with it, which doesn’t make much sense.

Artyom Galimov won KHL Rookie of the Year in 2019-20. This season, he’s put up 22 goals and 19 assists in 46 games. 5th in goals and 8th in points.

You mentioned “major consistency issues,” but the numbers tell a different story. He’s registered points in 9 of his last 10 games. Over the last 20 games, he hasn’t gone more than one game without contributing, and he’s recorded points in 15 of those 20 games.

Here’s what Martin Madden had to say about Artyom after the draft:

“We first saw him play four years ago with the under-18 team. He was slight, but he was smart. Reports show that he was an effective player at that time, but not super explosive, not super productive. He’s gotten better every year. Last year, he got on (scout) Konstantin Krylov’s radar once again because of his rookie of the year type of season with Kazan. When the season started, Krylov was sure to put him on our radar and the whole staff watched him play every one of his games up to date. He’s a leader in the KHL and a first power-play guy. He stands out, you don’t have to look for him, even at that level. Really excited with that selection.”

I don't know why you are creating an argument out of nothing. Are you offended by what I said? If you don't believe it you don't have to, there is no nefarious motivation.

When someone mentions inconsistency in the Galimov Gab, it's the macro version (several seasons) not the micro version (one season). Between Galimov's draft year and this current season, none of those seasons warrant being signed to an NHL contract. Galimov has shown flashes of offense because we have seen tweets of his goals throughout the seasons. No one is doubting Galimov's production this season; I've been chronicling his amazing year when I do my "prospect update" posts. That production is probably why we have reporting that Galimov could be signed by the Ducks for next season.

I took a screenshot to show the years between being drafted by the Ducks and this season to show the inconsistency.
