I get it's the Colangelo Contract Conundrum, but it doesn't make any sense b/c the prospect is putting his career on the line without an ELC. If Moore becomes severely injured on the ATO and before the ELC, then he doesn't burn a year off his ELC or maybe doesn't get an ELC. Why risk something when there's no negotiations on an ELC? I think this is the petty part in one of the Athletic articles about mgmt and contracts.

Unless there's some rule I missed that if a collegiate signs an ELC, then he must go directly to the NHL, but I don't think so. The 2024 #2OA pick signed his ELC with the Blackhawks and went directly to the AHL to start the season.

I agree it’s confusing to us fans. But there must be something to it if now a second player agrees to it. Especially given that they could say, no thanks trade me I’m not signing with you.

I think it's disingenuous to dangle an ELC, but first you gotta go through an ATO on a "handshake contract". Just be upfront and sign the guy. Why be so damned petty to put a prospect into such a precarious situation. It feels like forcing a kid without a contract to participate in summer workouts. Oops, we did that and got fined for it.

Remember when Verbeek didn't realize he signed Nesterenko to an ELC that start when he signed the contract as opposed to starting next season? I got bad vibes for non-top tier Duck prospects that Verbeek doesn't highly covet.
 
Today I was wondering if the purpose of the ATO is to let the prospect get some games to acclimate to pro hockey before signing with the NHL team, while not burning an AHL call up. Essentially protecting that players chance to get pro games this year.

iirc the team gets four post deadline call our which could be burned pretty quickly. Nesterenko already used one, Stian could use one, as could Luneau and Pasta if the Gulls fall out of the race and Pat wants to reward their play. If injuries get out of hand that could burn those slots in short order, signing an ELC later could avoid that issue.

That's not an unreasonable possibility. And it's a pretty good story to tell a kid "next year that could be you we want to call up and need space to do it". Not at all unreasonable when you're talking about signing college guys.

...Or it still might be something none of has a clue about. :laugh:
