2025 Draft Profile:
RW/C Mason West, Edina USHS/Fargo USHL
It's not every day we get to discuss a quarterback for the NHL draft (looking at you, Anders Lee), but here we are. Mason West is a huge 6'6.25" 218lb forward with perhaps some of the longest developmental runway in the class. The player is super athletic with very fluid skating ability, and not just for his size. He displays a strong level of on-ice awareness both with the puck, via his hand-eye ability and ability to see plays develop, and without, via his great positional sense and off-puck anticipation. Although not consistent, he has some very exciting flashes of both scoring and playmaking upside.
West, though exciting, is a tricky evaluation. None of his offensive tools are great at this point. The handling can have issues, the shooting and shot selection both can be problematic, the physical play is intermittent, and so on. This all kind of begs the question of: is he top 6 outlook? Is he bottom 6 outlook? What exactly is the upside of the player we're looking at here? And the answer is that we don't know, he's legitimately that raw. We're talking someone who was far from dominant at the high school level in spite of his size advantage, which usually is pretty alarming. Now, I don't mean to say he was bad, I saw a lot of solid fundamentals to his game and those higher skill flashes did look good, but he came off a little passive and a little more interested in playing with his line than imposing himself and taking games over. We're all thankful he got some USHL games in at the end of the season because they gave us a chance to see him play, and dare I say show even better, at a more projectable level.
Here's the thing with West: he's utterly massive, moves well, has a savvy brain for the game, is an early August birthday, and has spent the better part of his formative years training for two different sports. No, this player is not a late 1st/early 2nd round caliber talent today, but when we look at the base toolkit and factor in how well he reads the game already, you're really left to ask yourself: how much better is this guy going to be once he's fully dedicated to the sport? If he ups the physicality, if he's stronger on pucks, if his release is more consistent, all of these things can absolutely change in due time, and given the foundation from which we're working, he becomes quite the unique profile.
So, sure, there's plenty of risk to the projection, but you don't typically have that many hyper athletic giants with good minds for the game to choose from, however raw they may be. Interestingly enough, West confirmed that he will finish out his football career in the fall prior to to converting to hockey full time, so the team that drafts him will need to be patient in his D+1 season. I don't really anticipate that will affect his draft stock (now had he not committed to the sport at the combine, that would be a different story...) so I don't believe he'll be an option at 50, but I would be interested in rolling the dice if he did make it.
