Yep. Keeping grabbing the inept Cronins of the world on 2 year deals. This is the way.
There is a level between grabbing coaches like Cronin on 2 year deals and grabbing coaches like Montgomery on 5 year deals.

It's not like Montgomery doesn't come without pretty decent risk, being that he got fired after 18 months in Dallas due to drinking issues and having to go into rehab, and then lasted barely 2 and a bit years in Boston before getting the boot.

A 5 year deal is pretty wild given history suggests he won't even last 3 years into the contract.

Didn’t the Ducks fire RC #1 when BB became available?

I would have fired Cronin as soon as Montgomery became available if he was willing to come here.

Even though things are a tiny bit better now, I’m still strong in my opinion Cronin is a terrible coach for this team and is actually hindering progression of some of our players.

The ducks have extremely rich owners that are pretty cheap with the way they conduct hockey operations.

No surprise they wouldn’t commit to a 5 year deal

Owners are hands off with respect to Hockey Ops. They didn't cringe when GM Verbeek offered $6.5 mil AAV for four years to 34-year old Killorn. Verbeek is in charge of Hockey Ops. If you're gonna lay blame, then please direct it to the appropriate source.

As a fellow Angel fan, one would think having owners hands off from Hockey Ops would be amazing.

Kind of interesting, saw some discussion about Monty on the main boards and about how he made a comment that during their strong season he basically just let Bergeron coach.

Then I thought about how Cronin let the team basically coach themselves at the end of the year last season and we looked better.

I’m not saying that players should coach, but the impact of a coach is such a tricky thing to quantify.

I’m not sure the Samueli’s would sign off on Verbeek giving a coach a 5 year deal, but maybe I’m wrong

I’m glad they don’t meddle like Arte does but I do think there are certain restrictions. We’ll never know

Verbeek just missed an opportunity to bring in a legitimate coach. This franchise has failed the coach part of team building for almost a decade now, ridiculous.
We went after Pat Verbeek for his lack of signings in the offseason until we found out the contracts that were handed out to guys like Stamkos and Marchessault. And now, I feel like we're doing the same with Greg Cronin and Jim Montgomery. At the very least, can we wait until the end of this season to really rate the team's coaching staff in general? There's no telling how Montgomery's going to perform with the Blues and a 5 year contract is a heck of a commitment for someone who's barely lasted 2 years in his last 2 jobs.

Coaches are hired to be fired so who knows what coaches would be available by the time Cronin's contract is up.

Montgomery has never worked with a rebuilding team, is described as a “positive coaching” style coach (which Verbeek didn’t want), and signed a 5 year deal. There is no evidence Verbeek did NOT talk to him. Coaches don’t get 5 year deals because they usually get fired, then you have to keep paying them unless someone else picks them up.

I do think that Cronin burned up whatever benefit of the doubt he might have had over last season being “because of injuries” in October though. He’s in the “prove you’re not a mistake” territory for me now though, based on how bad the system was up until last week.
