Is this the first time in the NIL era that someone left a program and came back? Stetson Bennett did it but he went to JUCO

Forget who it was but someone from UNC who previously entered the portal changed his mind after the Belichick hire.

Thomas Castellanos is going to FSU. Luke Kromenhoek is leaving FSU.

Malachi Nelson is back in the portal
Darn. This would be his 2nd time in the portal. What are the RS rules with the transfer portal? Are there any now? I recall when the portal was introduced, you were allowed 1 free transfer during your undergrad.

He is apparently eligible but loses a year

So he has to RS in 2025? USC to Boise St to somewhere else now? And he was like 1/2 in QB rated QBs in the 23 class?
That’s what I read. We’re post-Covid and he wasn’t injured. I’m not sure because the rules seem to keep changing.

So, the kid has thrown 20 passes total in 23 and 24 and will sit in 25? And learn a new system. When you RS, with today's portal, no guarantee the HC won't go shopping for another QB in the portal after your RS year. Next stop is likely his last shot of winning a starter's job.

I mean, yeah, if I’m him I’m making sure it’s somewhere I have the job. Liberty, Oregon State, something like that.

Why would he have to RS? Is that new rule because there's been plenty of other QB's transfer more than once the past few years.

I know originally, the rule was 1 transfer during your undergrad, then you have a Grad transfer option after you earn your degree. I thought I might have heard that you can do more than 1 undergrad transfer without having to RS, but don't remember.

I found the above, so looks like kids can transfer so long as they maintain good academic standing.

So, if he doesn't have to RS, good for him, but he has to win the job at his next stop, otherwise, I would not bet on him being a starter in college at a 4th stop. To go from where he was ranked in the 23 recruiting class to now, I doubt most would have guessed that. But, not all top recruits make it.

Max Browne, Hunter Johnson for example, never were starters for a full season anywhere.

I love that we now have transfer portal rankings
Final year of eligibility coming up. He got replaced after the UW loss so now decided to move on. In hindsight might have been better off living on last year.
He was not a Riley recruit.

He’s from Santa Monica, and his mother worked for the school. It was probably his dream as a kid.
