All I envision with that scenario is Mikko playing out of his mind for Vancouver and ending the Avs playoff run. I would bet that's the same thought Sakic and CMac would have, but who knows.

Remember how Mikko played the game after Ismo called him out for having a lazy off season? Imagine how he'd react to being traded away from the Avs and immediately playing them in the playoffs.
EP would be pretty motivated to play against Vancouver too if he gets traded.... Especially facing off against JTM every other faceoff.

Drouin - MacKinnon - Nichushkin
Lehkonen - Pettersson - Landeskog/Colton
Wood ------- Mittelstadt -- LOC

Feels really unlikely, but also Renaud is one of the best reporters out there. Historically he migth be the best sourced guy with the Avs. He's nailed a lot of out of left field rumors.

If this doesn't happen, and Gabe comes back relatively soon, part of me will wonder if the Avs decided to start using the media to their advantage, with selective leaks to Renaud, Severali, and perhaps others?
As someone who's been out of the loop A LOT lately (just not having a lot of time to do anything that I want to do for myself), what have I missed w/r/t this post? Like why is Renaud being mentioned, etc.?

You must have better sources than him then!

Wow, this website sucks ass. I'm pretty sure both my computer and myself caught a virus.

That crackhouse of a website is referring to the above tweet. Calabretta is a Fouth Period correspondent, meaning he likely gets paid by the article (I worked as a writer in a different life).

He's referring to Lavoie's appearance on the Nick Kypreos and Justin Bourne podcast. Here's exactly what he said:

"The Avalanche don't want to pay him $12M, $13M, $14M next season. They're probably going to lose him, but they don't want to lose him for free. Is there a match with the New York Rangers?"
"There are some teams like the Colorado Avalanche that are like "if we can't have an extension with you, we're going to move you. Even if we're probably a Stanley Cup team." They need assets in return too, so we'll see how it's going to turn out."
"If you can get Mika (Zibanejad) in return, if you get a good player in return, there's a lot of ways you can do it, if you're getting an asset that's under contract for a few years, I think you're good."

The conversation is a broader discussion about all of the impending free agents on good teams, and how teams may be unsure how to navigate the salary cap moving forward. Lavoie also mentioned Zibanejad multiple times earlier, unrelated to the Avalanche.

After listening to the podcast, I can confirm this is clearly speculation and spitballing. It was the equivalent of the Trade and Free Agency Rumors forum, including a dumb and unrealistic proposal (something around Rantanen and Zibanejad).

Bottom line is Rantanen may or may not be dealt, but there was zero insight into the situation from this conversation. Reading into this discussion is the equivalent of reading tea leaves, IMO.

It all comes down to if they believe that they have a chance to keep him or not. It's possible that they don't want to go above 12M for Rantanen and they have been told that it won't happen.

Actually I think they may not want to go above like 10 or 11M.

The initial report said they haven't been willing to go anywhere close to the 11.5 to 12.5M range.
