At this point I'm not sure which one is more unrealistic: Landeskog returning or that bottom pairing.

I think Landeskog being held out to continue rehabbing because they don't have the cap space for him, is more likely than him being held out because he can't play.

I stand by that third pair fitting the Avs tendencies and past interest.

The difficulty with that approach I posted is the cap. Going from DeHaan/Malinski (sub-$2m) on the bottom pairing, to Ferraro ($3.25m x 2) and Borgen ($2.7m), a combined $5.95m, is an increase of more than $4m on the bottom pairing.

They'd almost certainly have to get some retention there, but SJ has no retention slots left. They'd need a 3rd team involved perhaps. Or just target a RHD with a lower caphit or get NYR/3rd team to retain on Borgen.

Using Malinski as a trade-chip makes sense in many ways, but replacing his $850k caphit on the 3rd pairing isn't straighforward.

No it's not, it's not going to be easy to figure out an obvious approach. I still have some confidence in our pro scouting though.

I don't know about two D, one at a higher trade price that they'd want to keep is the most likely I think. If it's two, the second is more likely to be a cheap rental.

Provorov-Savard are a combined 8.2M. Unless there's some serious retention taking place I don't see how the Avs make that work.

I've always liked Armia and he ALWAYS shows up for playoff hockey. However, I'm not sure he's got the speed to play the way Bednar wants his bottom six to play.
Nah. Bednar would fall in love with motivated Armia. He's a big north/south guy, relentless, goes to the dirty areas and wins the puck battles. Poor man's Nuke was pretty accurate.

A RD capable of pushing Manson to the 3rd pairing is a serious move.
Hypothetically speaking what would it take to get Dobson from NYI? Then either try to re-sign him as an RFA somehow or just flip him in the offseason.

Maybe something like Nichushkin + 1st + Ritchie? Nichushkin's capspace and Manson getting traded in the offseason pays for Dobson. Maybe that's not enough for NYI but Roy would probably love Nichushkin haha

Drouin - Mackinnon - Rantanen
Lehkonen - Mittelstadt - Colton
Wood ----- Parssinen - LOC
Kivi - Kelly - Ivan / Landeskog

Toews - Makar
Girard - Dobson
Malinski - Manson

Landy on LTIR all year, 50% retention or more on both, prorated for about 25% of the contract, and they can probably do it.

I read CBJ fans here saying a late first for Provorov with retention is probably fair, perhaps with a sweetner.

This is a scenario that’s hard to contemplate. If the Avs move on from Manson, it’s a good chance they’re choosing Malinski. In this scenario, it makes sense the Avs load up with similar LDs. Going by Habs fans comments, Savard is kind of a knob this year.

You'd probably have to switch the heavy role to the left side, and play Girard on the right.

Either that or they finally trade Girard. There is likely to be changes though if they are targeting someone they'll want to keep.

I don't know if I love this or hate this lol.

This question is going to infuriate a lot of people here, but what is Manson looking for on his next contract? Any chance he signs for a 3rd pairing role to continue here?

I, for one, am not a fan of going into the playoffs without the big fella being part of our D. He's simply made for that time of year.

Doubtful he re-signs IMO, unless it's for cheap, and he's penciled into a 3rd pair role. He'll be 35 in year 1 of his next deal, which means there's could be a dip in effectiveness, and injuries will be an even greater risk than they are now.

I agree, they'll need a big body to replace him in the top 4 though.

Unless he goes the super cheap, 1 year contract route I doubt the Avs have an interest in bringing him back after his contract is up.

Besides, there's some stupid team out there that would probably offer a 35 year old Josh Manson 3x3 and he'd be a fool not to take it.

Yeah, I was hoping we might be able to get him on a series of one year deals to wind down his career. Manson at 1.25-2M is a completely different animal from Manson at 4M. Especially if they keep them to one year deals or two at maximum if it makes it significantly cheaper (at this point damn near every penny counts).

Yeah, EJ says hi

There will be some changes coming. Although if he dominates the post season again this year. It will likely be Girard who goes. I'm ready for pretty much all scenarios.

It all hinges on Gabriel Landeskog. I've posted before but if Landeskog returns then yeah, some cap maneuvering will take place but I think names like Colton and Wood go before names like Manson and Girard.

If Landeskog is truly done, the Avs don't have to do anything even with Rantanen occupying 12.5M next season. Only if they wanted to retain Drouin they'd need to do something.

Yeah it does, I could see him coming back for the playoffs and then hanging it up even if it hasn't fully worked. He's definitely coming back though.

I wonder how much/if at all he's talked with Foppa during this process. I love Landy, but I don't want this to extend past this season without a heck of a lot more resolution. I don't want to have him break my heart like Foppa did with each attempted comeback. The fact that Peter played two games on the road but had to retire the day of his first home game still leaves me feeling a bit empty.

Part of me wants my last memory of Gabriel Landeskog playing NHL hockey to be him lifting the cup.

In 2025.

This is Ancient Lou we’re talking about, Dobson is on the Avs if they are willing to give up Toews and Manson to get it done.

I'm fairly certain we'll have clarity on Landeskog by the end of this season. I don't believe for one second he returns in the regular season unless someone like Toews goes on LTIR to end the year and makes room for him.
