I love JTM. This guy is built to win and f***ing despises people who don’t put work in.

Vancouver is going to trade him and they kind of have to and some team is going to be lucky to have him. I’d do bad things to turn Mittelstadt + whatever to get him. There was definitely a time he was discussed by the Avs brass back when Newhook and Byram were Avs. I’m guessing it can’t happen but f*** could you imagine him on the 2nd line with Nuke.

He might actually murder Nuke if he fails a piss test. Good

I can imagine him blowing up at Rantanen and telling him to work harder like the psychopath he is. Or yelling at MacKinnon to give him the puck despite being a clearly inferior player and dogging it defensively all the time despite his 200' game rep.

Just repeatedly screaming at Makar that Hughes is clearly superior

I looked it up, the Avs played the Sabres on Dec 3.

Since then:

Sabres: lost 10 in a row
Mitts: 11 gp 0 goal, 5 assists -3 and terrible advanced stats.

Surely Mitts had lunch or dinner with his old pals. What did they eat?

Wonder what kind of contract Kivi would be willing to sign to stick around.

He's been a league minimum guy for 2 straight years now, but he's playing his way above that this year. He's one of only 10 guys to play in all 36 games for us so far this year, and he's legitimately on pace for 23 goals which is actually wild to think about.

I still doubt he ends up hitting 20 Goals but if he does I doubt we can afford to bring him back. Somebody probably gives him $2-3M at that point.

But I am starting to wonder if he's someone worth giving like a 2x$1.5M type of deal. Dont think he's a legitimate 3rd liner but proving to be a really solid 4th line type of guy and a pretty effective PKer as well and doesn't look out of place on the 3rd line for stretches.

He’ll want the LOC/Wood deal.

Yeah if he keeps this pace up all year I could see it. As of today though I'm not sure he has much of an argument for that kind of contract. His career high before this season was 11 points, obviously gonna beat that this year(Already has with 12) but still this will be only his first year with meaningful production.

Wood was coming off of 5 straight years with at least 23 points minus the 1 full year he missed with injury. And LOC also had 3 straight ~25 point years.

Honestly even if Kivi did end up with 20-25 points this year, I'm still not sure that one season would be enough to earn him the LOC/Wood deal. Maybe some team like San Jose or Chicago who have extra cap to spend and are wanting to take that next step would give him that deal to try and help their depth but I dunno.

That being said, if the cap does end up going up by more then the standard 5% this summer, we're probably gonna see some crazy UFA deals given out and at that point all bets will be off. a $95-96M cap this summer would be insanity for the league. Could also see this being the way we lose Mikko honestly.

I hope we dont lose him though. Honestly if the Avs could find a way to make LOC - Kelly - Kivi as the 4th line, they'd probably be in really good shape depth wise.

Kivi is shooting for nearly 22% and has 2 empty netters in the same game. He's not scoring 20 goals.

He's gonna get 4th line money (below 2M)...maybe with term.

Malinski and his arb rights is a more interesting case. He got in the dog house yesterday but other than that he's been playing top 4 minutes for a while.

I don't think it's been just luck for Kiviranta, his shots have been deadly. I do think his S% will drop a little bit, but in return he will get more ice time and thus more scoring chances.

It's been a huge turnaround for Kivi. Don't forget, last year Colorado gave him a PTO and he was cut. He signed an AHL only deal with the Eagles and eventually signed a two-way deal midway through last November ($775K/$250K).

He was never sent down to the AHL, but he was still staring at the prospect of making only $250K last year. His next contract will be 7-8x that. I doubt it's here unless Colorado cuts bait with Miles Wood (which IMO, they should, regardless of this situation).

You don't pay more than 1.25M for Kiviranta imo. The guy has been playing well in a checking role this season but let's not get it twisted: he's a 4th line player.

You start handing out money and term to those kinds of guys and the cap gets even more tight real quick.

Love the guy, and if some team wants to splurge on him by all means take the money, Kivi. But that team can't be the Avs.

Only way I am somewhat ok with 1.5-1.75 is if Miles Wood is blasted to the moon.

Getting rid of Miles would open the door for kivi getting a raise, as well as prishchepov, steinburg getting a little more opportunity.

LOC's current contract is 1.2% of the cap, just give kivi 1.2 of the 92.5-94 projected cap

I would for sure dump Wood tbh.

This roster would be looking pretty good for next year honestly:

Lehky(4.5) - Mack(12.6) - Mikko(12.25)
Drouin(2.5) - Mitts(5.75) - Nuke(6.125)
Colton(4.0) - Ritchie(0.925) - Landy(7.0)
LOC(2.5) - Kelly(0.825) - Kivi(1.0)

Toews(7.25) - Makar(9.0)
Girard(5.0) - Manson(4.5)
???? - Malinski(1.0)

Blackwood(????)
Wedgewood(1.5)

It would have to largely depend on what exactly the salary cap is for next year. That group as is would come in at $88.2M. If its just a 5% cap raise to $92.5M, it wont work. If it ends up being a bigger raise to say $96M or something like that... It could work. At $96M they would still have $7.8M left at this point. Say Blackwood gets $5M of that, you'd have $2.8M left for a 6D at $1.25M and then two extra skaters at league minimum.

Obviously no idea if Landy would actually be playing or not either.

I think that's the right mark, if they want to keep him. A 2 or 3 year deal for $1.25M is something I could see happening but as you said, I don't see the Avs going over that.

If Kivi and his agent want more than that, I think the Avs will just let him test free agency.

He has stretches where he's not really noticeable but can also get on a heater. I shit on him a lot last year but he's way more engaged this season.
