Another day, another nothing from CMac. I guess he was perfectly fine with those shit show performances in Nashville and St Louis.

We're cooked. Not even really sure how you fix the shit storm. There are so many issues. At best we fix maybe 1 or 2 issues. That really doesn't move the needle much when you have at least 7 glaring issues.

2C
Goal scoring top 6 winger
2 3rd line players that actually contribute
3rd pairing dman possibly 2
New coaching staff

I don't know how you make the cap work to find that defenseman to bump Manson down. Also, if that guy comes with term then you absolutely have to move Manson during the Summer. Can't be paying 4.5M to a 3rd pair defenseman who is now struggling to remain healthy like he was in Anaheim.

Lots of ways to make the cap work with another top 4 D and Manson on the 3rd pair. They could even put Manson on LTIR if they need to. I'm sure he's playing with something.

The Avs moved on from Mikko so they could spread that money around the lineup. Spending on the D core to try to get it closer to what it was in 22 should be the goal IMO. They shouldn't be cheaping out on the third pair anymore IMO. We've seen the results.

Manson only has one more year, and the Avs went from needing to build a lineup with Mikko making $11M+ next year, to buidling a lineup with a $6.5M Necas instead. After that the cap will be taking two big jumps.

If they need to trade Manson in the off season and bring in a cheaper big RD, they can do that too. This plan was for this year's Cup run. They can figure everything else out, like Colton, Wood, and Manson in the off season.

it’s insanely quiet for Avs. They were scouting the crap out of CBJ before 4 nations and now radio silence. I’m holding out hope they’re still targeting Trent Frederic as a 4th line center.

While I agree with you, that 2C might not be there. The only guy I can think of is Zacha, and we don't know if he's actually available.

That's something I'm coming to terms with but as you say the defense needs help now and in the future if there is a snowballs chance in hell.

Yeah, we agree on Zacha. He's the kind of the lesser 2C I was referring to, when I said they should prioritize the better top 4 D, over the better 2C, because I think that will have the bigger impact in the playoffs.

Fortunately or unfortunately, they have other forwards they're hoping can come back, and help with offensive production. They don't have other D men.

And.. He'd have two of Necas, Nuke, Drouin, or Lehhky.

No 2C on this team is going to be in a position to fail.

Mitts just does not play the kind of hockey Bednar wants to get the minutes it seems. Zacha does.

We'd just need him to do what he's currently doing against lesser competition.

Exactly. Zacha can play with his countryman Necas.

Beggers can't be choosers, and in this market with the lack of options, with the needs for a top 4 defenseman as well, it's starting to feel like we're beggars for an upgrade on Mitts.

Zacha shoots more than Mitts which he Avs need, he's bigger and stronger so he can win more battles down low which is a problem for Mitts, he doesn't play a fancy hope play game which is also a problem for Mitts, and as you showed before, he has better burst skating stats than Mitts, so maybe that makes him a better fit as well.

I don't disagree with you. Our GM probably loves the dude.

But what exactly do you think Bednar is going to do if he's plopped down into the mix? Yeah, that's right, he'll put him on the fourth line, maybe move him up to the third but the moment he hits a guy and gets a penalty for being agressive he'll be banished to the 4th line and less than 6:30 a night just like every other player that is capable of playing the body. Bednar HATES these players.

I'm not really sure what is going on, but my best take is that Bednar is psychologicaly blind to the fact that he is projecting his own unworthiness to play in the NHL on all players that have grit as a hallmark. He has some basic ingrained mistrust or animosity towards them. There is absolutely no other excuse for cutting nuts off every bull and benching every player who displays an edge.

Honestly though, this is not unique to Bednar. The Avs effectively made Darius Kasperitis a eunuch as well.

I think the issue with Bednar and physicality is more complex.

He's praised big hits from guys like Landy, Calvert, Kadri, etc before.

He obviously played MacDermid and Middleton a fair amount. Both at forward and defense so that they were in the lineup.

He also said he loved Morgan Reilly cross checking Greig in the face for that slap shot on the empty net. Saying something about how you gotta have some pride and pushback when an opponent tries to embarrass you like that.

I think he likes physical play when the situation calls for it, he but prioritizes players keeping their feet moving, so that they're always hounding puck carriers on the forecheck, and hounding puck carriers and clogging passing lanes on the backcheck.

Ideally I think he'd love both, but that's hard to do, so he prioritizes positional play, over physical play.

I’m surprised he hasn’t tried Wood Colton LOC this year

Injuries to all three at separate times have derailed it, but they really should just try it again. Why not? It was too good not to try again.

Feels like the KGB line being broken up to start the playoffs and never seen again 2.0. They may not have another opportunity past this year, and maybe it boosts Colton's value for an off season trade as well.

They should move Drury up to the 2nd line temporarily with Mitts. Then try Wood-Colton-LOC on the 3rd line.

Then if it clicks again, maybe it ends up another elite 4th line for the playoffs, like Cogs-Helm-LOC. Obviously Colton making $4M on the 4th line is an issue, but him and Wood are off season problems.

This is potentially a very good forward group, where you can roll all four lines. You can swap the bottom two lines in the depth chart, depending on who's playing better.

Drouin - MacK - Lehky
Nuke - 2C - Necas
Landy - Drury - RW
Wood - Colton - LOC

Watching Carolina and Habs..man it’s tough to see Moose struggle so much . He’s losing money by the minute the way things look. Not quite as bad but reminds me of klingberg and Dallas .
Tough for me to feel bad for him when he was offered the highest winger contract ever and said no. Not too mention how cushy the role here was. Just go out there and let 29 feed you muffins.

4 million on Colton and 5.5 million on Mittelstadt is what well managed teams would do.

Garland would be the fourth best forward playing for the Avs. DeBrusk too.

I don't think the Avs and Nucks are comparable in this regard. Canucks have more of these bad contracts, and for more money.

They signed their own Wood in O'Connor for the same money with a bigger NTC.

Garland and DeBrusk are making $1-1.5M more than Colton. Mitts was a bad trade target, but not necessarily a bad contract at the time. They just panicked and acted out of desperation.

Avs didn't get fooled by a contract year and pay a soft casper like EP $11.6M. They let Burakovksy walk and traded a better player in Mikko for another better player in Necas.

Avs aren't paying someone like OEL $2.1-4.7M (depending on the year) in dead cap until 2031.

Raleigh is a dump.

The Canes play an awful style.

Brindamour stifles offensively gifted players.

Yeah, we'll see what happens, but it never felt to me like Mikko would be looking to get a big $12M+ payday, so he could live in Raleigh, when he could have the choice to live elsewhere, probably for the same money.

The playing style stifling his offense makes it even less likely. Poorly thought out trade on their part. They just like rolling the dice and crapping out.

Brindamour obviously isn't a fan of how Mikko plays.
