Friedman on Hockey Night in Canada:

- Canes met face-to-face with Andy Scott during the Four Nations.

- Made an offer “in the 9 digits” to extend Rantanen. Meaning at least $100m.

- Rantanen’s camp have said they need time, not saying yes or no.

- Lots of teams circling and waiting to see if Carolina wants to trade him.

I actually don't think Mikko is all about the money, but he chose to listen to his agent while he was on the Avs.

I think he regrets it now.

I have this weird feeling he wants to come back. Yeah, blah blah you can act like it comes from wishful thinking if you want, but I think he seen his whole career as beeing an Av, maybe getting his number retired just didn't handle it right.

Emotionally he doesn't seem willing to envision himself elsewhere long term. There is a lot of time between now and then, so we'll see if that changes.

I was right about Makar, right about calling Nuke the Russian Mark Stone (in more ways than I'd like). Every once in a while I read it right.

I could very well see Mikko wanting to come back, but it's just not going to happen for now. He's not going to sign for less than what he currently makes lol, which is pretty much what would have to happen for him to come back.

I just wish this Crosby. Thing to die. It’ll never happen
Even if it did, you just know that Bednar would play him and MacKinnon TOGETHER and then we'd all be - HEY WTF WHERE'S OUR 2C ???

Just go get Kadri - Mitts is young, has term and would fit Calgary. You already know that Kadri fits this team and this system - yeah you're not going to like the last few years of his contract but that's the cost of doing business.

The one thing that could happen would be a lower 1 year deal next year to sign a larger extension the following year. In that sense it turns into a 9 year deal but instead of getting the lower part at the end of your career you do it now.

I don't see it happening as it's a risk for Mikko potentially and the Avs will need to re-up Necas the following off-season as well. But just saying where there's a will there's a way. I think the Avs have moved on though, even if Rantanen did want to come back.

If Rantanen actually wanted to come back and was ready to take a MASSIVE financial hit for it, it should be willed to existence. And those responsible for not making it happen should be hanged by their balls.

But, I think Rantanen will just find another location that suits him well enough, and is willing to compensate him for it. There are about 25 teams ready to do it.

Well this is the unlikely part and why the Avs have moved on. If he doesn't sign with the Canes I do feel a little bad for Mikko. His career/life got turned upside down all for money that won't make a difference in his life. I do believe he got a little blindsided. He really should fire his agent IMO. Will be interesting to see where he ends up.

Mikko’s gonna get paid either way but he may miss out on some $$$ the way things are going. I’ll still be pretty surprised if the Canes flip him again.

"Mikko, Carolina are offering you over $100,000,000 on an extension."

"But Andy, this is just a dream. I play for the Colorado Avalanche."
Unironically, this could be happening.

Mikko had every right to hold on firm based on precedent and what was about to come. He was shocked the Avs actually made the trade. I wonder if there is some regret.

But like I said, even if Mikko would settle for like 11x7 deal now, we can't make it happen

As funny as it would be, I hope Mikko's not traded because I just know he'll end up in the West.

I mean why would Carolina trade him in conference, makes no sense

I don’t feel bad. He was playing chicken, his negotiations have never been easy. He can only ever blame himself

I think he was surprised that the Avs had the "balls" to actually go ahead and trade him but he wasn't blindsided.

This is from the Hurricanes forum :

trade

Aho was asked a lot about the Rantanen trade to Carolina, especially since Rantanen was not made available to the media since he did not take the ice Monday. He mentioned how perhaps a week prior to the trade, he was asked questions about Rantanen by someone in the Hurricanes front office.
Aho said he didn’t think much of it, but he did call Rantanen to see if there was a possibility of him being traded, and Rantanen told him he had just finished talking to his agent and yes, it was a possibility.
But then Aho didn’t really think about it a whole lot.
But then this tweet was thrown into the Hurricanes’ group chat on the evening of Jan. 24 with the team in the New York area, preparing to face the Islanders the following day

I was always extremely pro Kadri. I was a huge fan and was pretty upset he didn’t re-sign. Mitts is almost negative value at 5.75 might have to pay to get rid of him

We could definitely make it happen. It would mean we'd be top heavy next year and might need to pay a bit to dump Wood and Colton would be gone, but imo it would be worth it would the expected cap increase.

It's a pipe dream because it won't happen, but if Mikko did want to come back for that amount it's worth it.

Yeah, no.. there won't be lol.

Unless Mikko is willing to play meaningless hockey for the rest of his career trying to pull some franchise out of mediocrity, and he isn't that f***in good.

Who knows though maybe he thinks so high of himself that he tries it lol.

My problem with you is that you still seem to belive in him as some sort of elite superhero.

He's less than you fkn thought he was, and you need to come to terms with it. Just like he does lol.

He's not a 12M player. He's not THAT guy. He thought he was, so do you. Like no one else agrees now.

But.. he has 25 games and the f***in playoffs to prove me and a lot of other people wrong. So, let's f***in go, but I'm confident in my bet the fkr is out of shape, and there is no one left to carry his ass.

So let's see it.. let's see why he deserves 12 f***in million dollars a year? Prove it bitch. Prove it..

Who's betting he can right now? I'm not even sure your Homer ass takes that bet lol.

Fact.. he better do something, or f*** yes he's about to Klingburger himself.

Boo f***in hoo, he got lazy and we ALL noticed. Both the fans, and the organization chose to move on.

Mikko f***ed up, and that's a solid fact.
