It’s 4.7m cap space because we are carrying 8 defensemen since Kylington came back.

If we dump/waive Kylington, it’s 5.7m. If we dump/waive CdH or send down Middleton, it’s 5.5m.

We should assume 5.5-5.7m as our cap space. That’s a 13 forward, 7 defensemen, 2 goalie roster.

Yeah, I just meant that they would be sacrificing their D in the short term (the rest of this season), unless they have another deal in the works.

Still would rather that Avs get Jones. Maybe they could get enough retention from both Jones and Provorov to add them both? Provorov at $3M, Jones at $7.5M. If they move out Colton + Mitts and then 2 of Malinski, Kylington and de Haan, they'd still have around $5M in space for another Center.

Well yes and no.
Jones is owed 7.5M in actual dollars but has a cap of 9.5.
For example, if they retain 2.5M, the actual dollar cost is 1.5M. So they could effectively save 1M per year if they stay at the floor

It could help them reach the floor and save a couple million in most of the next five years potentially.

I get it but I don't think they'll need help to reach the floor as they are starting to get competitive.

Besides, what's the value of occupying a retention slot for 5 years? I'd estimate that alone is worth several good picks.

Yeah, whatever team takes that AAV will get the bulk of the value in the trade.

He's talking about giving up a top pick for a player with term. CBJ have their own 1st this year as well Minnesota's 1st from the Jiricek trade which gives them plenty of ammunition for such a trade.

If CMac was going to take a pure futures return for Mittelstadt though there would be no reason to watch two of their games in person. But maybe it's something like CBJ/MIN 1st + roster player for Mittelstadt, and CMac wants to do some scouting to decide which player he wants as the secondary piece. And then flip that 1st and more somewhere for Mittelstadt replacement. 1st round draft picks are often better currency as it's easier to find a trade partner than if you have to send a particular player back, so that approach seems logical.

Casey Mittelstadt: The asking price might be too high for Columbus' liking — a player would likely need to be involved — but certainly Mittelstadt checks all the boxes in what the Blue Jackets are looking for: he can play any forward position but is historically a center. He has two years left on his current contract after this year at an affordable term of $5.75 million average annual value. He's on pace for his third consecutive 50-point season. And at 26, he's young enough to potentially be part of a nucleus for years to come. For whatever reason, Mittelstadt just hasn't meshed well with the Colorado Avalanche since being traded there last season. Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reports that the Avs are willing to move him, but how motivated they would be to do so is unknown.

Provorov's brother is enrolled at Ohio State so he'll probably want to re-sign with CBJ in the summer even if he gets dealt as a rental.

Yea I don't care if we get futures for Mitts. We get rid of the contract and then use that ammo to replace him.

CMac wouldn't actively scout the CBJ games if he didn't want at least one player though.

If Avs get Provorov, that would probably mean no Jones and maybe they’re ok with Malinski being the #6

I'd hazard a guess that if he's looking at a player it could be a forward who can take Colton's spot so that he can be used in a separate trade (i.e a package of CBJ's 1st + Colton+ for a 2C).

Or CMac is insisting on including Wood in the deal and getting a cheaper 4th liner back to replace him. Or both.
