I'm just really not jazzed about paying Jones, or any other player really, anywhere near 7.5M long term for 2nd pair and PK work.

I think the meme of Jones and his contract have made him seem a worse dman than he really is. Is he a 1D? No. But he's still a big body and a very well rounded defender. If you bring him in here to run the 2nd pairing and essentially be the 2/3D he'd look infinitely better than the guy who has to shoulder the entire load of the backend. Obviously the price will be the biggest issue with him, but if he can be acquired at a decent cap hit he'd be an unreal addition.

Erm... why do NJ trade Nemec + Meier for Colton + Murphy?

Also, with Jones you can add to the trade to get better retention. With Dobson, you are stuck paying whatever he wants as an RFA, which on a long term deal is probably going to be 9+.

How many #2-3 right-handed dmen that can play in all situations and handle top pairing minutes are available, and come at a cheaper rate? Having Jones on your 2nd pair is exactly how championship teams are build. 7.5M will be closer to 5M today in a couple of years. It's exactly the type of move you creat cap space for.

If Makar ever goes down, Manson or Girard are playing top pairing minutes. Of course if that happened in the playoffs kiss our chances goodbye - but even in the regular season that could equate to a long losing streak

I haven't really thought about it enough to have a bunch of options for you. I just know that I don't like the feeling I get when I think about a Jones move. But I won't cry if it happens.

I'm not at all on board with a Jones trade, I just...don't think he's all that good.

Dobson would likely cost too much but if he really is available and CMac didn't at least make a call, I'd fire his ass on the spot if I were in charge.
