I think it's really unfortunate that we don't have 3rd pair defensemen who can kill penalties. It's forcing the Avs to keep Makar, Toews, Girard on the ice most of the game. Go get a good penalty killer for the bottom pair, and an upgrade on Manson. I still like Kylington as 3LD, but they need a 3RD

Luke Schenn is still an effective bottom pairing guy. Makes a lot of sense for the Avs.

I'm sure the Rangers always had the inside track. They had the pieces and they had the motivation with Trocheck and Miller being childhood friends.

CMac was probably a little wary of the fit with Miller here, and rightfully so. To match the Ranger offer it would have been something like Mitts + Malinski + 2026 1st at least, and that's a rich price for a guy with a NMC

Immediate reaction is that the list is pretty underwhelming and a bit all over the place.

OReilly isn't coming here with his contract or skating, or history. Why would Florida trade Bennett (who isn't a stylistic fit either)? Provorov is a pipedream rental which isn't how the Avs operate. There's a lot of bottom 6 C's (Evans, Donato, Frederic, Bjugstad, OReilly, Gourde) but the Avs dont need a bottom 6 C.

I get putting out names because they're available but at least be realistic. 3-5 are super unrealistic. Evans at 2 is super high.

Maybe I should listen to their show though to get some more of where they're coming from though admittedly.

What do you expect? They don't know much about hockey and drink too much lol. They're basically Facebook Avs fans.

I'm really annoyed they haven't made the follow up to Rantanen move yet. I do think this is Bednars and CMac's last shot to do something though.

A team that plays a different style should have interest in Mitts. He's not suited to our rush, high speed game that bursts your lungs if you can't keep up.

All 3 teams listed as having interest in him make sense.

Minnesota - Slower, grinding style. Even Kaprizov is a lot of East/West instead of pure North/South rushes. They don't play a game that relies on pure speed.

Boston - Along with Philly, possibly the slowest team in the league. They are a cycle heavy team that have always valued two-way forwards more than pure speed.

Calgary - Other than 1-2 players, not a rush team at all. Most of their offense comes off the cycle, engaging defensemen, and sending bodies to the net.

I could see him doing well on any of those teams as he wouldn't be expected to get up and down the ice at rapid pace 3-4 times per shift. Those teams are one and done shift teams.

He's just an awful fit for Bednar.

Completely agree with this assessment. It honestly feels like Beds and CMac haven't been on the same page with a lot of the acquisitions the past couple of years. The entire series of deadline acquisitions feels like guys that Bednar didn't want.

This here, coupled with CMac showing himself to be more aggressive than Sakic was (but to be fair, that wasn't a high bar to clear...even if Sakic finally pushed his chips in the middle which led to the Cup win), has me believing it is not out of the realm of possibility that CMac fires Bednar.

There's clearly a disconnect somewhere between the types of players that MacFarland & the Pro Scouts are targeting and the type that Bednar wants / would be successful playing the type of hockey he wants played. And when that happens...it's usually the coach that's the first to go.

Unless we show zero ability to actually put forth a winning streak and we start trending downwards rather than upwards, I think Bednar will get at least the rest of the season to prove that he can't do it.

Another poor showing where he can't seem to counter what an opponent is doing during the playoffs will likely do him in though. I believe that he's gonna have to reach the conference finals this year to stay on as head coach.

I don't doubt that C-Mac will get him the necessary pieces we are currently lacking. (#2C + two D-men)

Bednar has shown very little ability to adapt to most of his players' strengths though. It's like he's basically adapted everything around MacKinnon and Makar, which inherently isn't the incorrect thing to do, but you should also be trying to find ways to utilize the strengths of your other players.

A lot of those deadline acquisitions last year were seemingly neutered by Bednar's usage. Mittelstadt is not, in my opinion, a bad player at all. I think he's actually a quite capable Top-6 player. A 2C on a team that CAN compete for a Cup (but is built / plays more to his strengths). Bednar just isn't adjusting/adapting anything to help break him out.

And that's not the only time we've seen that happen. How many years now have we watched him run his top guys in to the ground during the regular season, leaving them out of gas for the playoffs, and then when another coach counters the initial punch the Avs give them he can't seem to do anything other than coach them to "PLAY HARDER!"

I love Bednar, I love his story, I love that he came in when he did and turned this team around...but he's got definite flaws, and this is one of them.

Wood, Colton, Duhaime, Trenin, etc... yeah, I think CMac would like to see the bottom 6 with a more sand paper and tougher to play against approach.

I don't think CMac's ideal 4th line is KKOC like Bednar is absolutely in love with it.

It's chicken vs. egg:

• Is Bednar misusing MacFarland's players?
• Is MacFarland bringing in bad players?

I can think of zero players who've left and seen their play improve substantially. I can think of many players who've become exponentially better/more productive under Bednar (Burakovsky, Nichushkin, Toews, Lehkonen, Drouin).

Byram and Rodrigues are the same players they were in Colorado. Newhook perked up last year before trending way down this year. Trenin was healthy scratched last week by Minnesota. Walker is Carolina's 6th defenseman - 2.5 full minutes behind the next closest guy - and his offense has dried up.

I'm team Bednar. I don't deny there are flaws there. But if we sum up the personnel issues with this team:

1. Bottom-3 defense
2. Colton, Mittelstadt, Wood

#1 is obviously on the GM. #2 I'm siding with the coach. Colton and Wood have severe hockey IQ issues and make donkey-brained players on a regular basis. Mittelstadt we've seen be good, but he's streaky as hell. Hockey isn't a development league, and I don't expect a Stanley Cup winning coaching staff to modify their game plan for a guy that's done nothing but lose with the Sabres.

I think all of this is moot, though. If MacFarland didn't believe in Bednar, he wouldn't be trying to move Mittelstadt; he'd be shopping for a new coach.

The way goaltending was handled during the offseason should show you that there was/is a clear disconnect between CMac and Bednar.
