This well balanced 20 man roster fits under Alan Walsh’s $97M cap next year at $96,455,833.

- Trade Mitts for Kadri at $7M (no retention)
- Trade Ritchie + Gulyayev + 1st for Jones at $7M ($2.5M retention)
- Trade Colton + Wood in off season for futures
- Re-sign Drouin to $4M x 4
- Re-sign Kiviranta to league min at $775k
- Re-sign Parssinen to league min at $775k

(Ritchie is a placeholder below at $950k if no longer on the team)

Lehky - MacK - Necas
Drouin - Kadri - Nuke
Landy - Drury - Ritchie
Kivi - Parssinen - LOC

Toews - Makar
Girard - Jones
Behrens - Manson

Blackwood
Wedgewood

Scratches: Kelly, Middleton

Why are the pitchforks out for Wood? The Roaring Twenties line last year had a bunch of success, and Wood scored that clutch OT goal in that series that Nuke snorted away

He has 3 points in 21 games this year and has suggested he has a chronic back issue that might never get better.

He’s not skating like he used to and is pretty much useless out there, arguably a complete negative with the penalties on top of it all.

Colton and Wood haven’t been anywhere close to what they were last year.

I wasn't concerned with Wood personally until his back injury. He just doesn't skate the same right now though and it may not get better, which is an issue considering Bednar's skating demands.

They also need to find some cap space if they want to make improvements. Without the back injury I think could consider Wood a 3rd line option, which makes his $2.5M ok.

As it is now though, I'm not sure they can count on him to play above the 4th line, so that makes his $2.5M an obvious one to try to shed if possible.

Wait…why are the Avs trading their two best prospects and a 1st for Seth Jones?

The cap next year is 95.5

To improve 2C and the D core to help them try to win a Cup this year.

My reasoning:

- Not worried about 1st round picks anymore
- Gulyayev looks promising, but is still a bit of a mystery box in the NHL, and won't help them this year, or perhaps next year.
- Ritchie looks nice, but not sure if he's a C or W, and not sure how long it will be before he's a top contributor.

Has that been officially set or is that still just an estimate? Isn't clear to me.

Usually they announce it during the playoffs after calculating the regular season revenue.
Yes, next year is 95.5 barring something crazy happening. The numbers after that are a little more flexible but pretty well set. League and PA negotiated it ahead of time.

Ok same plan then, but try to get Naz with $1M retention. Then play around with 18-19 man rosters and a bunch of paper transactions on off days all year to bank some space.

Some concerns with Naz aging. Some concerns with Jones at $7M. Some concerns with losing Ritchie and Gulyayev. Don't care. Balls on the table time. I like how that team is constructed.

18-19 man rosters are illegal lol

Need to dress 20 players (12 F + 6 D + 2 G)

You had Kelly and Middleton as scratches so that’s a 22 man roster.

Behrens is unlikely to earn an NHL spot next year, he just lost his entire first season of pro hockey.

I misspoke. 20 man rosters with paper transactions on off days, instead of 21 or 22. Like they've done in the past when not on LTIR.

21-22 man roster for game days most of the season, but they can find occasions during the year to bank some space with a 20-21 man roster when not on LTIR, by doing paper transactions on off days. Would be needed when up against the cap, instead of with more cushion for callups.

Behrens can be a placeholder for a similar salary, but I don't think it's out of the question he makes the team out of camp. Missed a year of development, but still a year older to get bigger and stronger. Most thought he could be a callup option this year.

And nobody dresses a 20 man roster. 22 min.

*edit. Technically I don't think it's illegal, but it's never in a million years going to happen.

The Avs have done 20 man rosters in the past. Risked it with no healthy scratches on game day. They've even been burned a few times having to ice a short handed roster with a late injury/sickness scratch.

Has something changed to not allow this anymore?

Could we get McTavish+dumoulin with Ritchie+1st+mitts+wood?

Thanks for posting.

Immediate reaction is that the list is pretty underwhelming and a bit all over the place.

OReilly isn't coming here with his contract or skating, or history. Why would Florida trade Bennett (who isn't a stylistic fit either)? Provorov is a pipedream rental which isn't how the Avs operate. There's a lot of bottom 6 C's (Evans, Donato, Frederic, Bjugstad, OReilly, Gourde) but the Avs dont need a bottom 6 C.

I get putting out names because they're available but at least be realistic. 3-5 are super unrealistic. Evans at 2 is super high.

Maybe I should listen to their show though to get some more of where they're coming from though admittedly.

I don't think the AHL makes sense with Wood. It's too much dead cap. You barely get any savings.

$1.35M dead cap + $775k league min replacement player = $2.125M vs $2.5M 4th liner.

I think you see what kind of interest there is for a Colton + Wood package in the off season. Target a rebuilding club that doesn't have cap concerns. I think Colton still has some value to some teams looking for middle six secondary scoring. Both good locker room guys.

Retain a tad on Wood if you need to. Throw in OO for the negative value on Wood and take a late pick or future considerations back.

If there's no takers then you do a buyout and trade Colton separately.
OO has no value and certainly wouldn't compensate for the negative value on Wood
