Imagine mitts for naz before the game tomorrow and they just switch locker rooms..... A man can dream
Probably the most sane way to go about this. Just hang on and enjoy the ride. We've already got the cup, so realistically we should be happy just watching MacKinnon and Makar fade away over the years and then look forward to a rebuild.
But I'm just too impatient for that shit. You're either competing for the cup, or blowing up your roster. Not a whole lot of in between. Too many teams don't scorch the earth enough or suck long enough to get the right core before exiting the rebuild. Hell, we had several restarts and still weren't anywhere complete on the back end until Makar and Byram where both in the lineup.
Naz has been really good for them; their 1C and a PP1 staple. They're not gonna entertain a Ross Colton return, if at all.Kadri would not be a long term solution. He'd come in for at least 1 playoffs run, then we see how long he can last. I'd like to acquire him if we can, for example, send out Colton instead of Mitts.

Trading him is probably the optimal fix here, but I'm not holding my breath given what we think is actually available in terms of "upgrades". I still really wonder if putting him with Nuke and Lehky solves this problem (two puckhounds and one with speed), at least for the rest of the year. For some reason he didn't look great with Nuke in a limited showing, but flourished with Kovalenko and LOC--which are stylistically similar albeit much less talented.
Ok so I know that getting Kadri back has become something of a meme on here, but I think bringing him back would not only improve the team, but make a ton of sense outside of filling a major need. So lemme put on my tin foil hat for a second. Naz is beloved by Avs fans as a whole. So what better way to remedy the loss of a beloved player than by bringing one back? Instant optics upgrade for CMac and the FO. And those questions about how the locker room might not be as tight as it once was? Bring Naz back. Nate is stoked. Cale is stoked. Bednar is stoked. Instant vibes improvement which = better play, which = wins, which = CUP.
BOOM. Make it happen, CNap!!!
Quite possibly, but sticking him between those two might be the only way he works as our 2C.Does seem like that's where it's headed, but we'll see. At this point though, I'm not sure we can say it could be a linemates issue with Mitts.
He's a playmaker, and played with skill players, like one of the best shooters in the NHL in Mikko. He's also played with two puck hounds in Lehky and Val who are also good shooters. Neither seemed to work well.
I think the issue is Mitts not his linemates.
The Miles Wood contract is going to be a problem...
That's hockey though. Not that i'm against it, but turning Byram into a 34 yr old Kadri when we could've signed Kadri for free (and cheaper) stings.
Honestly, if nobody will take him in the offseason then just waive him. Seriously. Eat the dead cap hit and get some level of savings, and get rid of this donkey.I wasn't really that concerned before, but he hasn't been skating anywhere near the same after his back injury. That's concerning on a long term deal, especially since he said he may be dealing with it his entire career.
Buying him out wouldn't be that bad either.Honestly, if nobody will take him in the offseason then just waive him. Seriously. Eat the dead cap hit and get some level of savings, and get rid of this donkey.

Why not both? We need a center and D, Zacha and Carlo would be solid pick upsColton gives off Boston Bruins type player vibes. I could see him involved in a package for Zacha (Czech buddy for Necas) and/or Colorado native Carlo.
I don't know if there's any team willing to take Wood without us paying them to take him. I'd rather not pay and retain. Here's the options with Wood:
Option 1: $1.35M x 4 in dead cap in the AHL. $2.5M AAV - ($775k league min + $375k)
Option 2: Buyout = $708,333 x 8
Option 3: Trade with retention
Think option 3 would be the way to go if needed. Might be able to get like $775k x 4. Then replace him on the 4th line with a league min salary. Would equal $1.55M cap hit for a 4th liner vs $2.5M with Wood.
So AHL or buyout? Expensive lesson learned.I don't know if there's any team willing to take Wood without us paying them to take him. I'd rather not pay and retain.
At that point, it's probably just worth it to have Wood be that 4t liner.I don't think the AHL makes sense with Wood. It's too much dead cap. You barely get any savings.
$1.35M dead cap + $775k league min replacement player = $2.125M vs $2.5M 4th liner.
I think you see what kind of interest there is for a Colton + Wood package in the off season. Target a rebuilding club that doesn't have cap concerns. I think Colton still has some value to some teams looking for middle six secondary scoring. Both good locker room guys.
Retain a tad on Wood if you need to. Throw in OO for the negative value on Wood and take a late pick or future considerations back.
If there's no takers then you do a buyout and trade Colton separately.
