Get Soucy+Jones

Toews Makar
Girard Jones
Soucy Manson

Definitely not enough assets or space but that's a playoff defense
Adding Jones and Soucy (in place of DeHaan and Kylington) puts the roster $3.3m over the cap. So you'd need to trade Colton and replace him with a $700k caphit. That's below league minimum so the replacement player would have to be someone with a $1.4m caphit or lower with retention to get below the league minimum... And to state the obvious that player would probably be quite a bit worse than Colton so you'd have a sizeable drop in depth on the 3rd line.

Maybe you could ask Vancouver to retain but Soucy has an extra year left so I doubt they have an appetite for that. But even with 50% retention ($1.625m) you're replacing Colton with someone for $1.675m AAV, so likely another downgrade unless it's someone else with 50% retention... and the price to get two players retained 50% (ie. Soucy and replacement forward) would make it not worth it.

And that's even IF Chicago retain $2m which in and of itself might be a bit much.

If we're getting Jones I'm sending Girard the other way. For multiple reasons but mainly because finding a low end 2nd pairing LD is easy and cheap. The guy won't be as good as G in the regular season but we're building for the playoffs and I don't think G is worth his cap hit in postseason hockey.

I’m pretty sure the idea is to deepen the positional depth no, and they don’t play the same side either do they? So after Toews is what?
I answered that already: "finding a low end 2nd pairing LD is easy and cheap"

Lol WUT? Girard is basically the perfect partner for Jones. Absolutely silly to trade him away if you get Jones because you're only going to be looking for someone who can do that job as good as Girard can... and with a rising cap chances are you won't get anyone near as good at that caphit without paying through your nose for it.

MAYBE you can consider moving Girard in like 2 years or something if Behrens or Gulyayev have proven themselves a bit but before that it makes zero sense.

I could see it making sense if you can find the right deal, and the right player. It could give you room to do both that, and upgrade the LD on the bottom pair.

A guy like Doumolin would probably be fine next to Jones. You could potentially keep Girard and Manson together. At least for this season.

Just get Jones first lol

So what's the deal with Ferraro anyways? Having a down year this year? Or is he just not good? I really know nothing about this guy.

I wouldn't want to trade G until the summer at least.

I liked Soucy a lot in Seattle but he has been bad for 2 years now in Van. Maybe he’s just not a good fit for RT? I don’t think he would be a 4 here and that’s too much for a 5 or 6.

Hard to shine on the worst team in the league. I think he would do well in Bednar’s system.

History doesn't agree with you at all.

Ferraro is a LD under contract for next year who makes 3.25M. If he lands here it's to play 2nd pairing LD.

If we were to trade for Jones a 3M guy on the left side makes a lot more sense than a 5M guy.

It would be interesting to see Ferraro, and then G included in the deal for Jones. There is your 2M to fit Jones in.

Not really a fan of Seth Jones. I would rather Anderson, Parayko or Carlo if we are upgrading 4D. Parayko is the least realistic due to term and salary. The other two would be great either with G or Ferraro.

Those metrics don't look so hot

Exactly why I want to add and not subtract from our top 4. Sure, there could be options that work but who knows how they fit this team. Wait at least until the offseason before moving anyone out imo, unless it’s for a guaranteed upgrade.

The deal is...he stinks.

It's impossible to tell from looking at the stats because they're brutal regardless of the performance. My take is this: 2023, awful. 2024, decent/okay. 2025, awful (but slightly better lately). His worst trait is his decision-making in the defensive zone. He's a turnover machine, often of the highlight reel variety.

Ferraro is mentioned often in this thread because he's the right age, his contract is right, and it's easy enough to write his struggles off as being trapped in San Jose. IMO, that's just the equivalent of box score watching. For my money, the only Sharks defenseman who's been worse than him this year is Jan Ruuta.

I know I'm laying it on thick, but I think it would be a horrible miscalculation for Colorado to bring Ferraro in as a 2nd pairing guy. Not only can he not hack it on this good of a team, but Girard is way better. Maybe as a 3rd pairing guy to see if they can work the issues out of his game. But I'd rather the Avalanche target a safe/boring guy to shore up the bottom of their D.
