What do you mean? That's how it works every year. That's why most trades happen at the deadline under the cap now.
Players don’t get cheaper. Teams accrue cap space to be able to afford more expensive players. But that only happens when you spend below the LTIR pool. Avs haven’t done that all season.

You don't take the full cap hit, you take a pro rated amount based on days on the roster. Same with AHL callups.

I know there is a prorated thing, but does it apply if you can't bank cap space?

LTIR and accrual doesn't change the fact that Jones would cost less towards the Avs cap if traded for near the deadline, than last week.

There's still a limit in how far the Avs can go over the cap with LTIR.

That’s just not how it works, sorry. Cap hits don’t get smaller, teams bank cap space.

Team's accrue cap space. Individual player's cap hits change based on days on the roster.

8. Team Cap Hit Calculations & Accrued Cap Space

"A team’s cap hit is calculated based on each day of the season (24-25 is 192 days). For every day a player is on the roster, the team’s cap hit is their full year cap hit divided by 192. Once a player is on the roster, the calculations assume they will be on the roster for the remainder of year. Example: If a player with a $925K cap hit gets called up 92 days into the season (100 days remaining), on that day the team’s projected cap hit for the year goes up $481,771 ($925K/192)*100."

It’s the same thing if you pick up a hooker early on a weekday, there is no prorated fee, compared to if you pick one up on the weekend. It will cost the same. So I agree with @hockeyfish here

Both are right AFAIK. Spending under LTIR does bank cap space for later, but also if you are under LTIR the traded for player will only cost a part of their cap hit for that year depending on when the trade happens.

Yeah, that clears nothing up, all I know is we don't bank cap space using LTIR over the cap.

What? Lol

The players cap hit still changes though based on days on the roster so it still matters.

If the Avs are up against the cap, and they have say $5M in LTIR space, they can't trade for a $7M AAV until later in the season when the prorated amount is less than $5M, with the divided by 192 days calculation.
