Ryan makes 900K. Idk if he's worth the pickup but he's at least an NHLer who can kill penalties which is more than we can say for guys like Innala/Wagner/Polin/etc.

He's only 30K more expensive than Innala so you could punt him to the moon but I also know every dollar matters to this team.
But yet they retained nearly $500k on the Georgiev + Kovalenko - Blackwood deal for some stupid reason.

Colton makes $4M, not $4.5M

We cant afford a 3C making $5.75M. Not unless they really did want to let Mikko walk, AND Landy is done.

My bad misremembered. The extra $500k does make a bit of a difference, just due to the total being essentially 2 fourth liners instead of one.

With that being said, I don’t think it’s impossible to run with it. There’s speculation the cap could go as high as $97m. If Landeskog is done we definitely have the space.

The Avs may be cheap at times, but there are much cheaper teams out there.

*edit. Also, SJ doesn’t have any retention slots. They probably wanted 4giev at a cheaper cap hit to make him more appealing in a deadline trade. Obviously him shitting the bed on a 2nd team isn’t going to make him much of a trade target. But that was likely their thinking.

Can we get Ferraro?

Ferraro's bad.

I see his name mentioned a lot, but he's a disaster in his own end. He's notorious for highlight reel defensive turnovers, which would never fly under Bednar. He's been SJ's worst defenseman this season, which is saying something because Jan Ruuta has also been really bad.

I wonder if the reason they retained, was that was the only way they could outbid one of the other teams trying to trade for Blackwood? LTIR gave them more cap wiggle room to pull it off than the other team?

Almost like the Avs just offered instead of SJ asking. I'm struggling to find another reason. Very unusual for them.

It’s clear we were not in a position of strength but rather complete and utter desperation. Everybody knew we had to move on from Georgiev. Any half decent GM would make the Avs pay more than anybody else, knowing we would be likely to cave in to get it done.

Yeah I agree, but it's still odd.

SJ doesn't even need the cap space. They're toward the bottom of the league in salary too. It almost feels like the Avs just offered.

For defensive help I'd be calling Seattle and seeing what it would take to get Oleksiak or Larsson w/ retention to replace Middleton and help solidfy the bottom pairing. If you can somehow add Gourde w/ retention cheaply that would be a decent gamble at 3c. Seems like his value has fallen a bit over the past few years.

Still having questions on what Colton's long term fit is here. Is he going to be a permenent winger? If so, would be my first choice to be a cap casualty.

I still want Brock Nelson for that 3C spot. Would work great in PP2, and expires at the end of the season to open up cap. I like Colton, and he’d be missed, but if he’s not playing centre then I’m not sure the Avs can handle the cap moving forward. Miles Wood and Colton might need to go to open up space.

Avs have some tough decisions to make before the deadline, especially if Landeskog is planning to return.

Oleksiak would be interesting, but Larsson starts his new 4 year extension next season.
