If I were Cmac or Mikko's agent, I would be negotiating his extension based on a % of the new cap rather than a hard dollar figure. Get that settled on and wait for the cap figure to come out and sign then.
Mikko's agent is 100% negotiating percentage of cap. If I was CMac, I want to avoid that as much as possible.

I don't want this guy making more than Nathan MacKinnon. Maybe I'm old fashioned but your best player should be your highest paid player. Mikko Rantanen is not our best player, nor should he be paid as such.

exactly this for me too. PL would have shipped him out by now.

Take charge and be hard. Send the message

So as long as Mikko signs for less than 13.75, he will make less than MacKinnon when you look at the cap %.

The actual caphit of MacKinnon is not really relevant now two years later, when the cap is going up like 13M dollars compared to what it was with Nate. In this world where re-negotiating contracts is not allowed, the idea that MacKinnon should set an internal cap is frankly foolish.

Still believe it will get done under his number.

Mack shoulda signed a 1 year at a time and signed for 17 I guess

Screw the % of the Cap , you won't win that way, ask Toronto?

If Mikko doesn't want to win then move him plain and simple

The reason Toronto hasn't won has had nothing to do with the fact that their superstars have taken that much money. It's the fact that their superstars suck ass in the playoffs.

And I'm sure Mikko wants to win. Just try to convince him taking a paycut, when MacKinnon literally became the highest paid player in the league when he signed his deal, and Landeskog almost went to free agency when he tried to get every dollar available.

I find it a little humorous that several threads in this forum lament the lack of depth on the Avs. Then the possibility of more cap space arrives, and suddenly it is just fine to pay Mikko $14M or whatever number his agent hears from other teams. Perhaps a Mack cap is not the worst thing. What if Wedgie turns out to be a great backup? What about Drouin, who is one of very few players not in Bednar's doghouse? What about a 5D and 6D that might cost $2.5M each, instead of added together? Or a 4th line without over-the-hill journeymen? All of these would be smart cap allocations as well.

There actually is an answer for all of these needs: Draft better and always have a handful of quality players on ELCs. But the Avs draft like crap, and have squandered virtually all of the remotely viable assets in trades for Ryjo, Eller, Trenin, etc. It will likely be 4 or 5 years before anyone not named Ritchie makes the roster on an ELC.

Either Miller or EP - in a hypothetical trade merely as an example - would give the Avs potentially $3M ( EP) or $6M (JTM) in cap room over the $14 Mikko seems determined to receive.

Sure, the Avs have had many injuries that impact depth, but who is to say that the Avs don't have the same injury issues next year, with a Mikko $14M contract choking the salary cap? Mitts falling into a sinkhole surely does not help either. But I am 100% willing to die on the hill of not paying Mikko $14M, instead finding a wing making $8M, then spreading the extra $6M around to increase the quality of the depth players on the roster.

yeah but none of them are worth what they make. They have the wrong stars.

Lots of players get points when they get all the opportunities.

Leafs will never win with those guys

That’s overreaction bro. He’s not that bad. He might have intensity and some attitude, but it’s not that bad
Bullshit. There’s a reason why two other teams moved on from a guy with that much obvious talent. His reputation for being a jackass preceded him to Vancouver, and now he’s pissing off his biggest advocate, Rick Tocchet.

I’d be fine with him (to a degree at least) if he always backed it up. But he’s shown repeatedly that he doesn’t.

Well, the Rangers want him back. They offered Zibanejad for Miller, Vancouver said no

I'm curious:

Is there a resource which would list a manifest of ideal Cap% in a lineup? For instance, Mikko wants $14M on a $96M cap. That is 14.58%. Mack would be at 13.13%, so:

Line 1 - Drouin (2.6%) - Mack (13.13%) - Mikko (14.58%)

Drouin artificially brings that line down. So what is a 1LW worth on the open market? Here are the 24-25 Avs Cap %:

Yeah, if I'm picking between JTM and Pettersson, I'm picking Pettersson every time.

Find me a source which says that Mikkos agent or Mikko or Avs said Mikko wants 14mil, because there is none. Can we please stop that bs.

Let’s all be grateful for Patrick Roy because I’m pretty sure if Rick Pracey had his way in 2013, Jones would have been the Avs pick.

But in the end didn't Sakic like Barkov? I never fully felt like Jones was going to be it.

God that was a long time ago now.

There’s an alternate universe where the Avs don’t match the ROR OS, the Flames lose him on waivers, and the Flames pick and Avs picks are 1-2

Except if they knew about the waivers thing they would have just let AZ know, and agreed to flip a lesser asset for him back. They had trade history with AZ too.

No one knew about the waiver thing lol.

So if Seravalli says he thinks that means Rantanens agent, Rants or Avs have said and its true, right... He just said it to makes us linking him as a source to make money of your clicks..

People like to say that because it’s a story but if Sakic didn’t like MacKinnon, the pick would have been Barkov. It wasn’t even like it came down to the last second. They said days before it was going to be MacKinnon.
