lol yeah. I have no faith in this organization. They do everything backwards, they think fans are stupid. I’m trying to figure out a way to not care and realize they won’t even be a contender in the next 10+ years
I can’t bring myself to cheer for losses, but the pick number might matter even for a trade. The Canucks were reportedly interested in Kirby Dach at the 2022 draft but got beat out because Montreal was able to nab a higher pick, and when Gillis traded Schneider the deal went to the team that could give up the best pick.
As I said, sometimes the two goals align, but sometimes they don't.
I think the Benning era is a good example of when they don't. The longer-term goal of building a cup contender that could go on deep runs was sacrificed to try and make it into the playoffs. Remember the whole "I think we can turn this team around in a hurry" business?
Benning traded away a 1st round pick despite the Canucks having finished in the bottom 10 of the league for 4 consecutive seasons. That's the sort of move a team makes if they think they have a shot to go deep, not one that a bottom feeder makes. Then, despite the absolute debacle of the covid year (Canadian division), Benning traded away another 1st rounder to acquire OEL in a vain attempt to make the playoffs and save his job.
In the end, the Canucks only won 2 rounds under Benning precisely because they were chasing phantom playoff revenue rather than building a deep pool of talent to support the (then) young core of Horvat, Demko, Boeser, Petterson, and Hughes. Canucks ownership refused to make the hard decisions and now it seems unlikely they'll go on a deep run to generate the playoff revenue they desire before that core ages out.
I would be fine with them trading the first round pick, but I also kind of doubt they will trade two straight first round picks while only making the playoffs one of the last three years.

They have no choice but to upgrade the team as much as possible to entice Hughes to sign next offseason. Keeping the pick would be a huge failure on that front, unless you have word from Hughes that he supports building for the future.
I thought we took the NJ pick over the better pick from the Oilers... or am I miss remembering?
He did but to trade in division with a goalie can come back to bite you in the rear end like SJ did when they ended up facing Kipper and Cal in the PO and were eliminated.
So, better to send him for pick 9 then take like 7 for Nurse. Unless there was something much better he could get on top. It was just Nurse and Risto who went ahead of Bo. So unless you think either was better than Bo, it didn’t matter.

Yes, I agree. But I think they will try to move the 2026 first round pick, or other assets like the 2025 second round pick and/or prospects.
This management, while trying to "compete now!", has also always tried to thread the needle by competing now but trying to also build for the future. Its extremely difficult to do, and usually fails, but they are trying to do it, and trading back to back first round picks just isn't consistent with this ideology.
It might be me who is misremembering. But I thought it was highest pick wins, but in the case of the Oilers Gillis wanted an extra second as an in division premium.
Should ask for a premium when it’s an in division team. Any F or D, don’t really need it. But with G, they can win series for you if you end up meeting up. If SJ sent Kipper to another club they likely make the finals in 2004 instead of falling in the WCF to Cal.

It's absolutely meaningless to me. Those teams are in garbage time now. Just trying to get to the end of the season without exerting too much effort.
Boston switched to tank mode when their top defenders got injured for a long time. They understood that even if they squeeze into the playoffs they would get murked and sold Marchand. Watch them return to contender status in 2-3 seasons.
Canucks would never do something like this because we have a moron owner and a spineless front office. I was wrong about JR having the balls to tell Fredo to f*** off. He does not and he is just content to take his money.
The top 16 is about as good as any other draft, a lot of draft eligibles really turned up this year. So we should technically still get a good player.
