Elite Prospects Ringside is racing each teams’ prospects and today it rated the Rangers with the 19th best prospect pool.

The top three prospects are Perrault, Othman and Emery. These three were rated in the website’s topping 100 prospects (see post 253 in this thread.)

Here are the remaining ratings with some highlights and an occasional note from me.. The site rates skating, shooting, passing, puck handlng, sense and physical and uses is 1-9 with 1-3, Not NHL caliber, 4-6 NHL average, 7-9 high-end skill.

4. Berard: Ratings all 5-6 with particular praise for his development as a playmaker. His NHL path might be hindered by his being a small player “without a separating gear as a skater” but notes he might have the skills and intelligence to overcome these limitations.

5. Sykora: Grades 6 for skating and physical and 5 for other skills. While noting his ferocity the analysis says he did not show offensive skills and taking a mistake free hockey and he’ll need to show puck skills to project him as a successful bottom six player. (My note: Acknowledging his youth and the ferocity of his play in the games I saw last season he showed very little offensive skills, was easily knocked off the puck and seemed reluctant to have the puck. I’ll be looking to see if he can take a step forward in his offensive game.)

6. Boilard: Ratings ass 5 and 5.5. Earlier in season considered a possible first round pick but his game stagnated and wasn’t consistent in using his skills. Needs to be more aggressive and if so projects to NHL bottom six.

7. Fortescue: Ratings all 5 except 4.5 skating and 4 shooting. Reliable, proactive defender. Lacks standout physical play and little offense except for good on breakouts. Bottom NHL defenseman is possible.

8. Garand: Different skills used for goalies with mostly 5s and a few 4.5s.

9. Rempe: All 4 and 4.5 except 7 for physical. Hands and skill in front of the net occasionally flash and reasonably mobile for his size but concludes odds are against anything more than being a pugilist in the NHL.

10. Laba: Ratings 4.5 and 5. Not most exciting player but MVP his last two seasons. Always well positioned, decisive, with high motor. Lacks standout physical aspects and offense not sophisticated but could be bottom six defensive specialist.

11. Robertson: Wide ratings range from 4 for sense to 6.5 for physical. Sees potential depth role if can improve his skating. (My note: Having watched his for 3 years what stands out is his lack of hockey sense. Lots of misreads on defense and shows little on offense. I don’t see it.)

12: BMB: Ratings range 4.5 for skating and other skills are 5 and 5.5. Although production declined he improved on details including his physical play. Skating improved although still sluggish. could be bottom six winger in NHL.

13. Roobroeck: Ratings 4 for skating, shooting and stick handling, 5 for passing and sense and 6 for physical. Combines Rempe physicality with Aspinall puck skill. Reasonably skilled and intelligent playmaker. Needs to improve on his skating to have a chance.

14: Ollas Goalie ratings mostly 4s with a couple of 5s..

15: Aspinall: Ratings 4 for skiing and puck handling, 6 for physical and 5 for other skills. Much better hands than Rempe and good around the net. Good skater for someone his size but needs to add another step as a skater and expand his offensive game.

16: Mancini: All 4 and 4.5 except 6 for physical. Reasonably mobile and moves puck effectively. Needs to develop offensive game and be more active defender relying less on his range and more on his reads. (My note: I saw Mancini play several games and except for one game where he struggled with the puck I thought he was solid defensively. I would have rated him higher and certainly higher than Robertson.

17: Lamb: Ratings all 5s except 4.5 for sense. Has physical tools and flashes high-end skill. Lacks physical dimension and plays too much on outside. Could be capable third line wing.

18: Chmelar: /all 4.5 except 6 for physical. Has pace pushing physical play. Offense lacks sophistication but could be forechecking presence in bottom six role. (My note: I saw him play a couple of games at Providence before he was hurt and then with the Pack at the end of the year. I saw a guy who not only was physical but showed flashed of high end skill. I’m a lot higher of him.)

Not rated: Hendricks, Karpa, Kempf, Larsson, Gredig, Vaisanen, Edstrom, Korczak, Boyko, Jones and Scanlin. The last two may have aged outing not sure how Edstrom didn’t make the list.

Could the writer simply mistaken Edstrom for Roobroek? And Schmelar and Mancini should easily be ahead of Ollas objectively. Otherwise I get personal preferences and ranking systems so I can accept the differences.

Just from your commentary you'd be a much better evaluator of Rangers prospects than the EP guy. I'm pretty much on board with how our rankings have gone. EP's guy is definitely missing on Edstrom who I think has a pretty decent chance of making the Rangers out of camp this year. Like with Rempe offensive upside isn't very high but to me they're both tailor made to be NHL 4th liners.

Some thoughts on a few of our prospects.

Boilard was a faller but he could have been a late 2nd or a 3rd and no one would have batted an eye. Sometimes dropping down like that wakes the player up a bit and you see a big jump in his D+1 year. Need to really see more from Aspinall and Gredig to even begin to see what they could bring. Aspinall is very big as far as height but also very underweight for his size. He's got to round into his body more. Gredig played for Switzerland at last year's WJC so barring injury I'd expect him to be on this year's team.

Roobroeck is not as fast as Rempe (or Edstrom) but he is a more balanced skater than Matthew. When there were comparisons made with Brian Boyle the other day as far as the skating.....he seems more like Boyle than Rempe does. Rempe just moves faster.....he just needs to work out some kinks. Roobroeck picked his play up a lot in the second half of last year and into the playoffs for Oshawa. Also he's willing and he fights well.

He misses the boat also on Mancini and Chmelar.

Not saying the Rangers should be higher than 19 but we have a lot of guys to work with who could become bottom line and bottom pairing NHL players. A few guys with higher upside starting with Perreault. I think Othmann will be a middle 6 winger and Berard has a chance at the same. Emery should become a top 4 shutdown type defenseman. What you read and from the clips I've seen of him he covers a lot of ground and has a similar defensive game to K'Andre Miller.

it's possible that one or two of these bottom 6 types pop and hold their own at the NHL level but NYR fans love penciling in a bottom 6 in 2026 of bmb sykora berard rempe roobroeck and edstrom.

A lot can happen at training camp but I think I'd be surprised if Rempe didn't make it after how last season and the playoffs ended. The reason I think Edstrom has a very good chance is he has about the same size as Matthew but is a better overall and smoother skater than Matthew and a very well rounded defensive game and he brings a nice physical edge too. He was groomed in the SHL (Sweden's top league) for 4 years to be a checking line player and he's good at it.

I don't think there's much shot that first year pros like Roobroeck or BMB make the Rangers and Sykora would be a real long shot. He was an underaged 19 year old for Hartford last year. He needs more time IMO. I do believe both Othmann and Berard have a shot.

Shit can happen though if for instance Rangers roster players get hurt in preseason. I like Brodzinkski but he could also be beaten out. Barring any forward injuries though I expect both Carrick and Vesey to be on our 4th line and that leaves who will win the 12th and 13th forward positions. My guess would be Rempe would be one....Brodzinski and Edstrom would fight it out for the other with a small possibility that the Rangers keep 14 forwards.

On Othmann if he has a great camp and looks like he could move into our top 9 and Kakko struggles to put up offense again it wouldn't shock me if the Rangers shop Kakko around the league.

Corey Pronman of the Athletic has a series and each team's players under 23 as of this September 15.

Because he used age as his selection criterion Lafreniere (Tier: NHL All-Star), Schneider (Tier: Bubble top and middle of the lineup player) and Cuylle (Tier: Middle of the lineup player) are included in his rankings. With these three NHL players he rated the Rangers 15th.

For the prospects his top players are Perrault (Tier: Bubble top and middle of the lineup player), Othmann (Tier: Middle of the lineup player), Emery (Tier: Middle of the lineup player), and Rempe (Tier: Projected to play NHL games -- with all skills rated below NHL average except for compete).

He listed 11 players with a chance to play: Aspinall, Berard, Boilard, Boyko, Chmelar, Korczak, Laba, BMB, Ollas, Fortescue, Roobroeck with notes on the following: Berard very good skater and puck handler who competes and has a legitimate shot to get some games, Laba and Chmelar are highly athletic who could be 4th liners, Roobroeck has skill but heavy feet could hold him back, Ollas and Boyko are long shots but athletic for their frames and Ollas has good hockey sense.

I would have had Berard and Fortescue higher, eliminated Korczak and included Mancini and Sykora (this must be an oversight although as I noted above he'll need to develop some offensive skills). Edstrom, Jones, Robertson and Scanlin are aged out.

Could the writer simply mistaken Edstrom for Roobroek? And Schmelar and Mancini should easily be ahead of Ollas objectively. Otherwise I get personal preferences and ranking systems so I can accept the differences.
He's not high on Edstrom (I disagree) and I agree with you on Chmelar and Mancini but it's his opinion. After the top guys (Perrault, Othmann, Emery and Berard) it's pretty much a crap shoot with all having some interesting potential but flaws.

Here's the issue with Edstrom and Rempe. Barring injury, it looks like the top three lines are set. Carrick and Vesey will be on the fourth line leaving one spot open. I think Brodzinski is the perfect 13th forward, can fill in anywhere, great team guy, won't sulk if on the bench. You don't want a young player as the 13th forward and not playing. It's unlikely the team carries a 14th forward who takes up cap space and doesn't play. The Rangers will want to accumulate cap space by not having a 14th forward. That leaves one spot, Edstrom or Rempe. I personally would choose Edstrom but I don't think both make it barring an injury.

I forgot Garand who I think makes his cut and is missing. Since he noted Ollas and Boyko I think this is just a mistake.

you're giving me all the reasons why Edström /should/ get a spot. I agree with all of them. he's big, he can skate, he's responsible, he was developed in sweden and lacks the classic NYR prospect taint..

but this is the Rangers we're talking about. He's not Cuylle. He's not gonna get a spot over Rempe. Rempe will get every opportunity, he could take 1 shift a game and serve 2 minors as a result of that shift and he'll get 35 games to do it.

the deck is stacked against Edström. it's a shame, because from what I've seen he's ready to contribute at this level.

Not out of the question, but you put our 1st line second, I see Miller and Schneids together, and I really think Jones gets a shot over Ruh..

but this is the Rangers we're talking about.

I didn't say he was getting a spot over Rempe but I can see him and Rempe platooning as 12/13 F depending on who we're playing.

Also shit happens and if we need injury replacements he'd definitely be in the conversation as 4th line with Vesey the most likely to move up to say our 3rd line.

Chmelar is intriguing because he skates very well, and not just for a guy his size and he is not afraid of playing a physical style of hockey. That alone should allow for him to develop in to a nice bottom-6 forward.

It's possible that in a couple years or so our 4th line will be Rempe 6-8/9 250+ lbs, Edstrom 6-7 240 lbs and Chmelar (the little guy) 6-5 230 lbs. They're all fast. They all play a physical style though Rempe's the only real fighter of the bunch. They all have some skill as well. Edstrom's a very good defensive player. That kind of line could be a problem for every team in the league. Also there's Roobroeck whose game really came on in the second half of last year. It was like something clicked with him. The Rangers could be a huge team in a very short while and that's very okay if those guys can skate and play.

it's possible that one or two of these bottom 6 types pop and hold their own at the NHL level but NYR fans love penciling in a bottom 6 in 2026 of bmb sykora berard rempe roobroeck and edstrom.
lol literally on the same page:

coaches the Rangers hire don't put lines out with more than one rookie or 2nd year player. I doubt Edström gets more than 10 games before christmas.

You say it as if it’s not a standard in the NHL applied by all other teams’ coaches.

Edstrom will be 25/26 in a couple years. He's well schooled for what he does. 4 years in Sweden's top league as a checking center. He's a better skater than Rempe--almost as fast and more agile.

FWIW I like Brodzinski. He's stuck it out and worked hard at becoming a NHL player and in the AHL he's an all situation player and when he was playing with the Pack he was their most important game after game forward bar none. He's a for real pro and he has real fortitude. That said Edstrom is younger and much bigger and just as good a skater and Brodzinski is a very good skater. Edstrom can keep up with guys who are much smaller. He's not like most huge players---he's not a plodder. He has both speed and quickness. The Rangers were very impressed with him last year and maybe Jonny beats him out and maybe he doesn't but he has more than what it takes to be a regular bottom line NHL player. He doesn't have a lot of offense though and that's why his upside is what it is.

The reason I think that Rempe wound up sticking instead of Edstrom---is the hitting and the fighting. Edstrom has a strong physical game but he doesn't run over players like Rempe does and he doesn't fight. Laviolette saw more usefulness in Rempe's physical game over Edstrom's and that was the deciding factor I would guess. One day maybe even Rempe could diversify his game and be a regular on our PK. Edstrom could probably fill that role right now.

there's a select few. Rangers don't hire those guys.

dude i'm not talking about what should happen. i like Edström a lot i think he'd be a great 4th liner and PKer. i just think he doesn't get that chance.

I think Rempe will likely be a part-timer. The team clearly likes him and Laviolette clearly likes him, but I also think it's apparent they both see that at this point he has limitations. He'll have to show improvement in his skating and also his restraint before Laviolette plays him every night. And then on those off nights, someone like Edstrom may have an opportunity to slide in.

The thing about Edstrom is that he's a prospect, but not in the traditional sense where it would be crazy to suggest he sit in the press box half the year. He has played a lot of high-level professional hockey to this point in his career, and while he still needs to play to improve, it wouldn't be like having Berard or Othmann or whoever on the roster but not playing. Edstrom likely has room for growth, but he's also likely a lot closer to being a finished product than most of these guys (Rempe included).

I wouldn't hate a rotation of Vesey, Edstrom, Rempe, Carrick although I would prefer to see Rempe playing every game. If that means he gets bounced up and down from the NHL to the AHL a bit this season, so be it.
