The Caps have a good record drafting and developing players so my gut tells me Hutson will end up a good, scoring defenseman. His defense isn't good and he might get ragdolled a little by stronger forwards.

Emery would be the opposite, a guy who is a lockdown defenseman who doesn't do much for you offensively.

Both have a lot of value in the NHL today and both have some areas where they're really raw. If you like Hutson and think we made a mistake not taking him I won't try to argue that with you, but I don't think it's fair to draw conclusions about the two when both are 18 and possess completely different skill sets. It would be like complaining we took Kreider instead of Jordan Schroeder based on their freshman years.

It's easy to see that Hutson is a gifted offensive defenseman. He was outstanding at the WJC's. I think he outshone Zeev Buium by some margin and Buium's another really good looking offensive D.

The strengths to Emery's game are going to take some time to shine. He needs to get a bit bigger and stronger too to make those strengths stand out more. Hutson's game is not built the same way. Skills don't necessarily need size or strength. Right now I'd have to say he's ahead if I was going to rank them.

You can also see how the Caps are going to need someone like Hutson in their plans. Carlson is not going to be around forever and Chychrun might be gone as soon as next season.

The Rangers need a bit more definition from their defense corps. Some of that might be coaching or systemic. The Rangers have a top notch goalie but for him to play his best they still need good defenders. We have Fox to run the power play but we could use better puck moving and more offensive pop from the rest of the group and I don't think they think (for that matter I don't think so either) that Jones is the answer. Emery and Fortescue when they comer are going to fit more as defense first players though.

There was quite a bit of that complaining around here if I remember correctly. Comparing it to the Jessiman pick. A lot of fawning over the Dallas pick that was a total bust too.

The Emery-Hutson complaint doesn’t fit because it’s 13 picks later

almost all of the talk in roster thread is about which forward we trade for, sign, steal.

I have heard very few ideas about defensemen, but that's where our changes need to happen.
