2024-2025 Prospect Watch

I've caught little of video clips of seeing Simashev, but based on what I've seen and statements made by others, he kind of strikes me as a high floor guy who's very good at actual defense. Not sure where his ceiling might be. Also he's huge.

What else should I know about him?

What else should I know about him?

Maybe you've already seen this?

BA's "unicorn" comments are intriguing. If this kid is anything like this article describes him Utah has a true gem and BA is brilliant. If not...

Checking In On Utah Hockey Club Prospects: Defenseman Dmitriy Simashev

"There’s a very strong argument that Simashev was the best defensive player taken in the 2023 NHL draft." / "6-foot-5 frame and elite skating abilities" / "While his size is notable and certainly makes him a fierce defenseman, it’s his skating, edgework, initial steps and top speed that makes him such an elite prospect." / “'The elite quality of him is his skating ability,' General Manager Bill Armstrong told KSL Sports. 'His agility is the elite of the elite'" / "defense and physicality has been the emphasis for Simashev as he absolutely smothers opposing forwards with his stick, shot blocking and winning most one on one battles." / "Simashev has not been asked to contribute offensively for Lokomotiv... Does he have offensive instincts and capabilities? Absolutely."

So glad we're going to find out for ourselves what we've got real soon.

Sounds like he's describing how Jaccob Slavin is used for Carolina. Excellent defensively, and while he has offensive skill, the way he's deployed does not require him to use it.

I'll be shocked if they stay in Russia. Every interview I've read (very few, really) sounded non-committal, but positive IMO. I think these guys want to come over. I like to believe they made the decision long ago but are just keeping it private until then.

Just the vibe I get. I don't think BA us concerned. These guys know they've got lots of opportunity with Utah that they don't in the KHL. The biggest being minutes and usage.

I was just looking to see what's out there regarding But. Came across this article that is old, but new to me. Says good stuff about But at last years Development Camp.

Who Is Danil But? Meet Utah HC's Prospect Camp MVP
Impressive how inaccurate that article is, given how short it is.

It says DanBut and Sim and Nordh had a chance to crack last fall's Mammoth roster. Two of them were contractually ineligible and the other couldn't even stick with the Road Runners. It also says that Nordh is a defenseman.

Anyways, it's cool that DanBut was named prospect camp MVP. I didn't know that.

You forgot $$$$.

Posted in off season thread...copying here:

Checking the KHL finals...

Game 1
Lokomotiv lost 1-2
But played 3:44 seconds. 1 shot
Simashev played 11:54 with 3 shots

Game 2
Lokomotiv won 5-2
But played 9:08 with 2 shots
Simashev played 8:53 no stats

Game 3
Lokomotiv lost 2-5
But was a scratch
Simashev played 7:16 and had one assist and a +1

Utah definitely needs to sign them and get them over to NA. They will need a year or 2 in the AHL just to get some playing time.

Jury is still out. Not a great fan of the picks atm.

(note: I do think the players have potential...great size, skating and skill. They have not been able to show much in 2 years since drafted. Certainly not like a Demidov.)

I read it using that temp link, thanks.

I noticed that it also said he was playing at a fraction of his best last season due to the injury.

I'm excited to see him at the WJC and Memorial Cup next season. Really big year for the kid.

BA's quote got me thinking about how Scouts/GMs are going to have their own definition of what makes a player the BPA. It's all about priorities.

"You take the best player available, but the character has to be there too."

Gregor Biber is doing well for Austria at WC. He plays such a responsible game for his age. He's already a pretty good stay-at-home defenseman and I'm pretty sure that he'll make his way into the NHL. The question is when: I think he'll see NHL ice sooner than later.

You've landed hell if a steal for a 4th round pick. Now if he can add a solid shot to his skillset, he could outpreform many, many prospects from his draft class.
