2024-2025 Prospect Watch

I am getting worried about the Simashev pick...
I was not happy with the pick when it happened and my opinion hasn't really changed. I have however been able to change my perspective on it. If But was picked at 6 OA then Simashev picked at 12 OA, I would've been excited from the start. So in my brain, that's what happened. The pair is a good result from those picks.

We don't have any results yet to judge if they were good or bad.

That's a huge part of the problem. Right now they are playing 3rd W and 6 D sometimes 7 D

And if we are stupid enough to let them play in the NHL that's what we are grooming them for.

I do the same thing to feel better about the picks

Based on what I read, I get big guy that skates really well version of Zybynek Michalek impressions in my head. He sounds he could be a beast in the shut down role but kind of a black hole on offense. I know BA said he believes that Sim has more offense in him if he's utilized differently. Hope he's right.

I'm not worried about being disappointed in But. I am Sim.

That's pretty much how I envisioned it, they were speculating DanBut would slide and knew Simashev wouldn't be there at 12th. I also believe the Russian factor at that time, where the 'Yotes didn't have to offer a contract for 2 years and they develop in the KHL.

Simashev was not on any pros list in the top 20. All we heard was from Bill saying others were going after him. Simashev is a high risk pick. Hopefully pays off as a number 2 Dman but looking like a 6 ova for a number 4 dman

Please prove me wrong.

RT Schemp please prove me wrong, anyone please .

- In his pre-draft rankings Cory Pronman had Simashev ranked 17th.

"Projected bubble top and middle of the lineup player" / "I see a lot of indicators of a strong top 4 NHL defenseman." 2023 NHL Draft prospects: Bedard No. 1 on Corey Pronman’s ranking, Fantilli and Michkov next

- In his re-draft from this past October Pronman bumped Simashev up 10 spots from 17th to 7th.

"Top-of-lineup player" / "When I saw Dmitriy Simashev at Gold Star’s summer camp, he was very impressive. He’s massive, about two inches taller than what I thought he was in his draft year, to go with strong mobility and puck-moving skills. He looks like a big minutes NHL defender." 2023 NHL re-draft: Connor Bedard, Adam Fantilli, Leo Carlsson lead the class

I agree that Simashev is a controversial pick. There's a wide range of opinions on him. But the bottom line is that we need to wait and see how he looks after coming over to NA before making any hasty and irrational judgements on the type of player he's going to be.

Edit:

I remember hearing talk about how good Simashev looked at training camp. Some were saying that he looked like he could've made NHL roster out of camp if he didn't have a KHL contract to honor. In support of that Dobberprospects had this to say:

"July 2024- Simashev’s play at Utah’s development camp raised a lot of eyebrows, as the smooth skating defenseman looked ready to jump into an NHL lineup. Signed for one more year in the KHL, Utah fans will have to hold their excitement for a little longer." Dmitri Simashev

I'm really excited by what I hear about Simashev, personally.

Also , since this Ukraine thing , not many teams have scouts in Russia

That's true. In this article Morgan confirms that not only was scouting the Russians hard because scouts weren't able to travel freely, but he also talks about how BA and the 'owskis travelled to Belarus to watch them in a tournament. I found it odd that under the circumstances there was only one other team there scouting. Does support a lack of due diligence on the part of other scouting staffs. I was proud of our guys going the extra mile when other teams didn't seem to.

Our guys obviously saw something in But and Sim that others didn't. Might be simply because they weren't there to see it too lol.

From Russia with gloves: Coyotes pull NHL Draft surprise with Simashev at No. 6, But at No. 12 - PHNX Sports

BA also seems to think that But is now 6-7/6-9. He was drafted at 6-5 .. which I think is the same size as BA .. if he now towers over BA and can skate like the wind . That is an awesome find
