You don't just give up a top 4 player in the league, someone who fixes all of the Lakers long term problems,without shopping him. Even if they f***ing hate Luka personally and have confirmation he's a serial killer in the off-season you get way, way, way more for him than this.
The NBA is a star driven league. The Mavs had one of the few that makes his team a contender just by being there.
I don't think this will change the Lakers fortunes this year, but it does for the next ten.
This is the kind of trade that is so bad and so suspicious it makes me not want to watch the league. Mavs' dickhead billionaire owner is gonna get some sort of casino approval in like 6 weeks and we're all gonna be told to pretend these aren't related events.

Honestly the Lakers should trade LeBron and start over. I don’t see how they can coexist but it could be a massive opportunity to turn your entire franchise around without having to even do that much

Honestly, my suspicions aren't even with the Adelsons. It's that Nico Harrison owed Rob Pelinka some kind of favor from his time at Nike and this is making good on that.

Most NBA superstars are dickhesds, but rarely ever get traded unless it‘s necessary, but then everyone would expect it to happen and not be caught off guard.
This trash happens with the Lakers all the time, remember Pau Gasol.
