NHL 2024- 2025 Out of Town III: Ovi passes Gretzky w/ 895 G

For context….

Pasta 388
Ovi 895

If Pasta doesn’t score again this season, he’d need to score 50 for the next 10 years to get within 7 of Ovechkin.

Crazy!
I was surprised to see that Pasta has five more hat tricks than Crosby. Not because Pasta isn't great, it just seems like Crosby should have had more lol

As if 14 hat tricks is bad

Ovi has a freak ability to not be seriously injured. Factoring in how he played the game, it's a true unicorn scenario. To be both a lethal scorer and to have that consistency / durability is the rarest of rare combos IMO.
Yep. Makes me think of Lindros and what his stats would have looked like without all the injuries and concussions. Dude was a scary beast in his prime but that style plus his inability to keep his head up plus Scott Stevens was a bad combination.

Good for Ovi! Shows any record can be broken……but….it’s nice when they aren’t so we still give respect to the players from years ago that built the game

Awesome. What a way to do it too. Ripped a snipe just like he did when was 20 years old!!!

Call me dinosaur, but I’m thrilled that a true power forward has the record.

Absolutely. Exact same could be said for our Cam Neely in terms of what could have been. f*** you Ulf Samuelson (I hope I got your shitty name spelled wrong). Again. Sincerely.

The guy did avoid empty netters at the end so I will give him that.

But I still don’t really care. He is no close to Wayne in any way
I don't think anyone believes he's better than Wayne outside of goal scoring. Gretzky was never the GOAT goal scorer though.

Played in an era where the parity was at an all time low with goalies barely understand how to play their position. Bossy, Hull and Jagr were all better goal scorers but didn't have the stats to show it.

Ottawa could tie Florida if Detroit wins. Panthers have been dogshit lately

You hate to see it…but more than that, you love to see it

This is the dumbest thing I have read in a long time.

Hell of a run from Ottawa. Couple people were worried about a choke but that looks incredibly unlikely given how useless the Rangers are.

They're not on St. Louis levels of "yeah i don't want to play them" but with how they're built, i would probably pick them in a 7 game series over Toronto.

If Mario Lemieux had been able to stay healthy and play straight through from 1984-05 until he retired in 05-06, he destroys both Gretzky's goals and points record IMO.

Mario never even cracked 1000 games (915 spread out over 2 decades). Still for my money the greatest offensive force this sport has ever seen. I'm too young to have watched Orr when he played, and too young to have watched Gretzky with the Oilers. Mario is still the best player I've ever seen in game action.

He comes back after 3 years away, in the middle of the season at age 35 and puts up 35 goals and 76 pts. in 43 games smack dab in the middle of the dead puck era. Unreal offensive talent.

But he didn’t. Reality is a bitch

I wasn't around for it but i will also forever admire his 92/93 season.

Dude is tearing the league to pieces (100 points in his first 40 games iirc), gets diagnosed with cancer and obviously has to step away for a bit.

Dude comes back, somehow blows past LaFontaine and his 12 point lead in the scoring race with an absurd 56 points in the final 20 games to win the scoring title and MVP by proxy.

Absolute king shit.

Probably, but the longevity is part of what makes Ovechkin's accomplishment so great.

There are a lot of great pure goalscorer out there over the last 30yrs. None of them had the longevity that #8 did, for a variety of reasons. And its not like #8 played a soft game, either.....

To be bagging 40+ this late in his career is just super impressive. If you'd have asked me 3 years ago, I would have thought he would have been limping along at 20 goals/yr by now, chasing a record. Nope. He's doing it while being THIRD in the LEAGUE in goalscoring....at age 39. Its nuts.
