NHL 2024- 2025 Out of Town II

There wasn’t anything good on TV this morning before the football games, so while I was looking for something to watch, I stumbled upon Classic Hockey on ESPN+. I decided to watch Game 7 of Bruins-Habs 1979. The Too Many Men Game. I was 12 when it happened and it ruined my summer. Never watched it since, but I decided to confront my demons….. Couple of things that stood out….

1. Terry O Reilly was slower than I remembered. Still love him though.
2. My Guy LaFluer PTSD has returned.
3. Gilbert was awesome, but damn, NHL goaltending has really improved over 45 years. Goaltending has probably improved more in 45 years, than any other position. Back then, goalies came WAY out of their creases, and basically relied on flopping on their side and stacking the pads in any high danger situation. The butterfly style was way more revolutionary than I originally thought.
4. The Too Many Men penalty was really blatant. God awful. I think we played 5+ seconds of hockey with 6 guys on the ice.

Worth watching, if anyone is in the mood for self inflicted pain. We went into the 3rd period up 3-1. Lost 5-4. Cash got 2 and Nifty got 2.
Watching a replay of that game is one thing, but living through it was absolutely heartbreaking. I was a junior in high school at the time. I raided my parents liquor cabinet after and just sat in the dark at the kitchen table in disbelief and disappointment. I firmly believe if the Bruins had won that game they would have beaten New York in the finals. Probably of all the missed opportunities over the years that one still hurts the most. Top 5 disappointments: 79, 19, 74, 71 & 23.

After being static for years, there’s no doubt there’s a massive turn here.

League Leader in takeaways last season (Malkin) finished with 90 in 82 games.
This year it’s Makar, who is pacing for 66 in 82 games.

Giveaways in 2023-24, the leader was Pasta with 98.
This year it’s Weegar, who is pacing for 153 in 82 games.

88/98 in 2023-24
66/153 in 2024-25

I know this doesn’t… it doesn’t SEEM to matter. I’m focusing on relative minutiae. But there’s got to be a reason. It’s just strange to me.
I think it's just an understandable randomness in the metric, especially when dealing with individuals. If there are any math nerds in this sub-forum who have time on their hands, they could likely quantify it. I think the big daddy proof of that would be total giveaways/takeaways per season, leaguewide, instead of individual players.

As far as specific players go, all I'll say is Pasta was ridiculously cavalier with the puck in '24. He was looking worse this season until probably a month ago, where it seemed like all the egregiously bad passes/puck protection added up to a lesson for him and now he's all better after leveling up.

Regardless, all the cool people know it's all about the holdthepuckaways/keepaways. Nothing inflates the fun numbers like dangling and cycling. Players are chipped. Puck's chipped. Everything's totally set up. Does the NHL care to share? Please..

Crazy stuff...only 6 points separating Boston Ottawa and Toronto. Essentially a bunch of teams will be battling for a playoff spot come April. All it takes is a serious injury(ies) to wipe out a team's chances to playoff birth. How can you not like this competition. It was a matter of time before the Sens Habitants and Wings creep in. A bunch of teams including Jackets Rangers Flyers will be fighting for wild card.

I know a GM shouldn’t rush a trade. But if the room is completely torn apart they need to move one guy out now. Stop waiting before it gets even worse.
He’s certainly rushing a trade with comments like that. I would also think he’s lowering players value in said trade too by making it clear basically that he has to move one.

To make matters worse in the off season, I was hoping Sinden would sign
Joey Mullen, who had just finished his Senior year at BC and Robbie Ftorek
who ended up signing with Quebec in the off season when his WHA Team wasn't absorbed by the NHL.

Boston was an older team in the 1978-79 season and needed to get younger.
Ftorek was a quality center and was 27, while Mullen was just 22. Mullen, I felt worse case would be with the B's in March '80, if he went to the '80 US Olympic Team.

Could have seen Bourque, Ftorek and Mullen added in one off season.

Wouldn't you consider both McAvoy and Lindholm out for extended time to be serious injuries? And yet, somehow, Boston is treading water and staying in the fight. Yup, crazy stuff.

Caps re-signed Logan Thompson yesterday at 6yrs @ $35.1mil. That's $5.8mil/yr......as opposed to $8.5mil.

Just sayin'.

A good deal, in all likelihood. An interesting one too. Vegas had to choose between Thompson and Hill. Similar ages, similar records, but Hill was a little more experienced and most importantly he was the one in net for most of their Cup run. Partly by luck, but he took that chance and ran with it. So Hill got the nod. No question Thompson has out-performed him so far this season though, and been very impressive while back in Vegas Cassidy's been busy calling out his goalies (as he likes to do), and not without cause.

Who knows, perhaps in 12 months it will look different. But this may be a rare case where the Knights got it wrong.
