Speculation: 2024-2025 General Lightning Discussion II: New year, same Cooper shell

Saw this on Reddit:

Gdafo

This is also referred to as srs by some sites albeit they don't do it for offense and defense. It takes a teams standard ga and gf and adjusts them for opponent difficulty(scoring 3 goals vs nj or dallas is a lot more impressive than 3 vs the penguins). You have gaafo(goals against adjusted for opponent) and gfafo(goals for adjusted for opponent).

Deviation

I've used this stat before. It basically compares basic stats for offensive or defensive production like shooting %, shots against, pk%, etc and relates them to league average for offense and defense.

xgf/ga adjusted

This is a slightly flawed stat, it uses moneypucks xgf/ga model and adjusts that for a teams pdo, aka shooting and save %. Obviously the issue is if a team takes more higher or low danger shots, that have a less or mote likely chance to go in, it should hurt or boost their xgf/ga.

Is the McD/NYY trade the last time we traded for one of the top names available?

I feel like we never get involved with the big TDL names. I could be wrong...

Didn't we just get involved with Hanifin last year?

If Coleman, Savard, and Hagel do not count then yeah, that is the last big one we made.

We rarely have the money. But we do tend to look for deals, like Hagel. He certainly paid off.
That ended up being a hell of a trade. I didn't expect him to be this good. I expected maybe 25/25 guy that could PK but he's getting better and better. He's like 2018 Point imo.

Yeah, that's true with Hanifin. I meant more big name players.
Hanifin was the big fish last time and apparently we were in until the very end though.

With the way this team was/is structured (Kuch, Point, Vas, Hedman, Stamkos/Guentzel taking up half of our cap space) we will likely never go for a top-3 name at the TDL: We don’t have the quality pieces (prospects and picks) required to make a three-team-deal for cap retention work and no cap space and not enough quality pieces to make a straight-up trade happen.

Unless we want to move on from one of the big five or say Hagel which I doubt.

The Lightning have 4 road back to backs in January. They aren't far distances, but still. Seems nuts to give us so many days off early in the season (which may be good considering the injury situation), but damn.

LA-ANA
NJ-PIT
TOR-MTL
CHI-DET

Big name trades are just less and and less common since the cap happened. Everything has to match up right. Feel like we were in a different position to do that mcd trade. Young team with a big bright future in front of them compared to now where the retool was inevitable after all that. It's just a different situation but you admire our aggressive attitude as some have pointed out and if you compare that to other teams it's pretty damn good. Trades and we used to be excellent at the draft too made this window last so long. We have a lot to appreciate here honestly. It still looks pretty good right now considering the ride they've had.

It's not easy to keep it up and that's the whole point of the cap so it keeps it interesting with different teams doing well. But we've been in there for a long time and annoying the hell out of the northern teams that hate these fl teams doing so well for long. Its on them for not having as good as management as we do. Hope we can keep it going this year. Last few years was weird where it felt like maybe if a few things went our way maybe we were in fls position.

Luck is always a thing but we will maybe need some this year and then obviously need our guys to show up when it matters most. Which they've been real good at for most part in last decade or this era that were talking about. Maybe we can take a breathe in the middle of the season when playoffs are still a bit away. We will see where they are later on. Go bolts!

We'll find out today, but Guentzel and McD might get selected for the US 4 Nations team.

Everyone always complains that the US keeps trying to build an NHL style team and not getting anywhere. They'll do it again here, but the 4 Nations Faceoff isn't a thing. They might as well have tried a different way of building a roster.
