Speculation: 2024-2025 General Lightning Discussion II: "Atlanticly" challenged

They have cap space this year and continue to bank it for the deadline. TB has been able to make meaningful trades under far more difficult cap constraints than they face now, makes no sense to worry about it. BriseBois' misses have been far more glaring (percentage wise anyway) on the FA side than trades, nobody would even say a thing if it wasn't for Jeannot. That's not a legitimate counter point, as much as people love to bitch about it still. I guess some people chirp the Duclair trade but that wasn't egregious, it was a pretty standard deadline trade. Honestly, that one was probably the most out of character for him in terms of the usual approach. You have to give to get, you don't win anything by sitting on your bum refusing to deal assets. JBB's recent comments paint a pretty clear picture of what's in store, barring a disastrous 2nd half.
I think the Jeannot trade is the only one that was objectively bad. It's just that it was SO bad.

I don't even think you could call any of the UFA signings bad, really. None of them handcuffed the team.

That is true, although I'd say Sheary was a pretty bad signing. It's hindsight, but still puzzled me a bit at the time. You can see JBB's logic behind them all but you need some of those buy-low candidates to hit (not as in being physical).

Even Girgensons and Atkinson, I really thought at least one of them would become a real effective bargain but they just don't have much in the tank. I didn't believe it myself at the time, but there were plenty of Flyers and Sabres fans warning about these guys for awhile. Same with Sheary iirc. Not "bad" players, but they just can't accomplish much out there. He seems to target guys of similar profiles hoping they can be cheap semi-replacements for Gourde, Goodrow etc. But we have ended up with a few too many 12-14th forwards instead.

When you take chances its bound to backfire every now and then but I hope JBB is not deterred by the Jeannot trade. For as bad as it's made out to be, he was able to dig himself out of that hole pretty nicely. So I trust his ability to make things right even after a mistake.

Florida signed Boqvist as a UFA this offseason, anyone could have had him. I don't think our need for soft one dimensional offensive defensemen has increased since then.

If Morgan Frost was a righty I would have been all over that, someone earlier was asking why Philly would trade their young productive players, there you go. Farrabe and Frost would have provided instant young scoring depth

Farabee ($5m x3( and Frost ($2.m, pending RFA) are both a couple years older, and more expensive now and moving forward, than Foerster. PHI also took on Pelletier, in addition to Kuzmenko, from CGY, who’s as young and cheap as Foerster, and has been contributing thus far in a limited role in his still brief career.

We wouldn’t be able to make the exact same trade, but none of the pieces Calgary gave up were players/picks we don’t have. Kuzmenko looks like a straight cap dump, Farabee and Frost are both just like a year older than Pelletier.

I am not trying to analyze too much who won, the big point is Philly took the futures/prospects and gave up young productive players

honestly he is an upgrade in our bottom 6 and maybe he finds his game here with Paul
Hoping he can fit into the top six and thus improve the bottom six in one stroke.

I know there are downfalls to his game, but he's a pretty consistent 20 goal scorer. If he can mesh with Hagel and Cirelli you have to think there's a chance he will get back there this year. Hagel is unreal right now.

Friedman on 32 thoughts said there is speculation that a few teams might be willing to give him a 2 year deal and its unclear what term Saad wants. Friedman says lots of teams have interest and mentions Vegas, Edmonton, Toronto, New Jersey, and Tampa specifically.

Blues fans were saying he was cooked, injuries broke his shot and he's been AHL quality. Gotta be optimistic that they are wrong now.

We were warned at length by the Flyers fans about Atkinson and Caps fans about Sheary. I have never been less optimistic. This is like addressing pain in a leg injury by breaking someone's arm and saying "That leg doesn't hurt so bad now doesn't it?"

The guy just walked away from $5 million... we probably have multiple moves cooking today. I doubt we're just adding Saad. We are probably moving players out

Darren Dreger this morning on TSN 1050 Radio said he expects Saad to sign with Tampa Bay.
I am starting to think that statement is us getting used as leverage Saad's camp for a better contract. We don't leak. Like ever. Like not even once. He is either blindly speculating or Saad's agent leaked it. If Saad *IS* coming here then the rest of what I said in my other 2 posts applies

We also heard that about Shattenkirk, McDonagh, Duclair, and probably 9 other guys.

If the contract is small enough, it doesn't matter. It's a stab, and has no impact on other moves.
