Speculation: 2024-2025 General Lightning Discussion II: "Atlanticly" challenged

And yet everything Calgary got from Vegas (cond. '25 1st, cond. 3rd, and an okay 3rd pairing dman) are things Tampa could have matched. If Calgary honestly thought they were going to get Vegas's '25 1st with the condition that was set, they were kidding themselves. Since we don't know JBB's offer, who knows how much he was willing to part with, but a '26 1st+conditional lesser pick and one of Raddysh/Perbix/Crozier/Lilleberg were certainly pieces Tampa had to offer. The Jeannot trade weakened their asset pool and re-signing him cost them Colton, which I thought was a mistake as soon as they traded him, but it didn't keep them from having what was needed to, in theory, acquire Hanifin.
Yeah this is just a guess since we don’t know what was and wasn’t on the table, but the other team still has to like what you have to offer even if in theory it’s adequate value. Hanifin agreeing to the contract shows it’s pretty clear Calgary begrudgingly was going to take it, but a 2026 1st and a shallow prospect pool is going to get beat out by another team without an overpay, which we were in no condition to do last year. On the other hand Vegas had broader assets and a recent 1st

So true. He scored glitch goals that season. Mid flight tip ins, redirects. Pretty sure Josi and co were zipping pucks at him and it worked. He was a flash in the pan offensively and is probably a 10 goal guy the remainder of his career, which isn't bad, but certainly not what we had hoped. His skating was awful from day 1. I mean, flat out awful. Stone hands... I really don't get the overpayment, years later, when those things were clear as day.

If you analyze his 20g season, the vast majority of his shots were near the circles or net. The following year he was shooting the puck from the perimeter

I think it was just poor scouting on our part. Someone must have thought the Preds had the reincarnation of Tomas Holmstrom on their hands and told JBB we needed to go all in with sirens blaring and guns blazing. It was never going to work given how our defense is absolute shit at getting the puck anywhere near the net -like ever.

Picks from us are/were not equal to picks from us.

the what now?

not really sure why we constantly talk about the jeannot trade. hey, i think ol' JBB was wrong about J-dawg too. but that's kinda how he's been having to play it lately with cap considerations and an unattractive lower level farm system that we had for the last couple of years. gotta shoot for the moon and find that diamond in the rough. and sometimes you get coal, sometimes you get a hagel.

remember the boyle trade? that was just money. waaaaay worse

I don't particularly want to trade Geekie. If JBB does trade him it needs to be something like a Hagel deal. Otherwise just leave it alone. This team needed to start getting younger like 2 years ago and Geekie was the first of many steps we need in order to get in the right direction. Any logic on who we don't trade comes down to who the most ready to play for us and when. Howard and Duke are my untouchables in the sense that they'll both probably be here by this time next year. Gauthier and Shaugabay both are probably 2 years out so they're more "on the table" if we are gonna swing for the fences.

Otherwise we have 6 months until we have some honest to God cap space for the first time since dinosaurs ruled the earth. We'll figure it out then

Referring to a deal we could have matched. I don't think we could have. Would have taken more.

He had several weird tips/deflections and what I'd say goals he wouldn't replicate again. Good for him, that season bought him years because hitting 20 is like 5 year job security in the league. He just did very little of that with us which was weird. The tools didn't change though. Heavy stride, stone hands, slow release.

My stance as well, but looks like JBB will grind whatever grease required to win another cup

The same incentive Chicago had to trade Debrincat and Hagel or for Nashville to trade Askorov and Jeannot. They won’t come cheap

I don't think either club is in a situation that resembles where Chicago was at when dealing Hagel. It's hard to imagine either is interested in a combination of magic beans and unseasoned prospects when they're trying to compete now, nor in roster scraps.

26 goals last year, only 7 this year, but the blues are ick. could be a decent plaayer on the third or fourth line for this teaam

shit, dude makes $4.5 milly? lmao

Wow is he really this bad now? We don't tend to take reclamation projects off the waiver wire. Could he be better than Geekie or is he just not an NHL player now?

Right, and it's very possible that JBB didn't offer as much as Vegas thinking they were the only destination. Calgary also may have just liked the player they were getting better than any of the young dmen that Tampa had to offer. I was only saying that Tampa still had the type of picks to pay the kind of price that Hanifin brought back, even with the rough Jeannot deal. I really hope that Gauthier pans out, because losing Colton for him, and using most of his salary to pay Jeannot and Sheary has not worked out that great thus far.

Roster building is more dynamic than that, even if they don’t need prospects or picks, those are still assets they can use to acquire immediate help next year. Neither one of those teams is positioned well to win this year, but obviously things can change

Looks like Boeser will be available. I really don't want to be the team that overpays to get him and then gives him an 7x8 this summer. Feels similar to E. Lindholm but only worse defensively. The only Right shot established scoring forward I would look at is Rakell. The Flyers have said that Foerster could be available if a young center goes the other way, maybe Geekie + 2nd(TOR) for Foerster, Cates, and Andrae

I'd put an offer together for Bjorkstrand before Rakell, and especially Boeser. I wouldn't give up Geekie for Foerster, but if he's a guy JBB has set his sights on, who knows what he'd pay.

Foerster for Geekie is the groundwork for a deal imo

This team will lose in the first round of the playoffs. So sad. Ridiculous that people dont want to face reality. I have been a fan and following the Bolts since 1999.

In our current iteration, depends on who we face

I have been a Bolts fan since my dad put me on his shoulders to watch the inaugural game at the ex hall

That can be true and also not mean the window is closed. We have our opportunity to improve awaiting us imminently. We can bitch all we want but we gotta trust the process
