I'll bet we see an improvement on special teams after having some time to focus on it in practice.

We have one real prospect in the entire organization and he's currently on the 2nd line.
And he has more goals than Gus, Atkinson, Glendening and Sheary before he was sent down. There's a reason I never said anything about our prospects being great in that statement. But the hill they have to climb in order to be more productive than what we have right now is about as hard as going to the fridge in your kitchen. They'd have to manage a singular goal between them were they all brought up

They are not blowing up the AHL so if we have to wait, so be it. It resembles a plan at least

Productive isn't the only goal. They also have to not burn the house down when they're here.

Our prospects aren't good. And as bad as we might think our bottom six is, filling it with guys who are just okay a whole league below is not the answer.

I'm in favor of waiting as long as we need. I'm not saying pronto as in "let's call up a guy who has a month of AHL experience and is barely figuring it out". Just more like we have spent a decade justifying leaving prospects in Syracuse years longer than necessary because of the team we've had at the time and we say "Well they can get playing time in the AHL" we don't have that team anymore

Whenever they're ready, send em. Take as long as you need. If we are gonna have bad bottom 6 players do it this way instead of throwing rookies into the fire. As you said, they're not that good right now

What would it take to bring Malkin in for a year and a half?

He's not what he was even though he's still effective. But do we really want to continue giving up futures? We still don't have a 1st rounder for next year. I don't wanna give up more future 1sts for Malkin. I'd like to go with what we have and focus on a youth movement

We are a long way away from a youth movement.

Ok, ill play. Lets say I change my mind for a minute. I want to entertain this. So if Pittsburgh is doing a fire sale (except Crosby) and you're willing to give up more picks and prospects. Is Malkin what we need or would you be willing to strengthen the D by bringing in Karlsson or Letang?

I respect those guys but Karlsson to Tampa is not only dead, it's a terrible idea. Malkin isn't worth what we'd have to pay up to get him. Letang? Meh. Pass. He's not getting any younger or getting us any younger

It would make sense if we traded Cirelli for a haul like we got for Sergachev but I doubt anyone is gonna give us that kind of return. We may end up better off just keeping him

How is bringing in Karlsson or Letang strengthening the D core? Both are shells of the their former self's. Petterson is the target form their D. Also how the f*** do you think you fit either of those contracts in?

Someone mentioned in another thread Gourde. I think that would be savy move if we could get him

Since you weren't paying attention I'm not the one who wants it, others here wanna give futures for Malkin so I was just running all options if we considered Hypothetically. I'm in the keep our picks group.

Eller would peak my interest as well as Puljujarvi. If we could get the cap to work out, i wouldnt mind a Matt Grzelcyk for the bottom pairing

Malkin or Karlsson might help with %50+ retention, otherwise makes no sense. Especially the latter with his length of term.

Eller or O'Connor could be a fit but I don't feel strongly about it.

Outside of the star players, the Penguins have the most bland and soft roster I can think of in a long time. It's actually frustrating to look at the way they're built. They go down 6-0 in the first period and not even an ounce of fight or pushback. Just sad.

So you want to give up more 1st round picks for a 38 year old?
Honestly depends on the 38 year old.

But we definitely can't be prioritizing the future over right now. It will be almost impossible to get the core we have right now down the road, so we have to try to capitalize while we have it, even if it gets unlikely we will win another cup.

Eventually Hedman will decline and we will have to decide whether or not to sell what we have left and do a real youth movement. Chances of it getting us a better core than we have right now are slim.

Malkin as a 2C is pretty intriguing. It would depend on the price. I wouldn't give up a ton of picks, but not because I think we should be intending to use those picks. More because I don't want another Jeannot situation where we can't improve the current team because we blew the farm on one guy.

Pettersson is the player they should be looking at acquiring the most, followed by perhaps Eller or O'Connor. No one else should seriously be considered. I would try to trade for one of Palmieri,Vatrano, Gourde, Kuzmenko to address the middle/top 6. All picks and most prospects should be on the table, especially if JBB feels confident in extending the player or if they have term. While Tampa doesn't have a great deal of roster players they'd move, anyone in the.bottom 6 aside from Paul (and magbe Eyssimont) and any of Lilleberg, Raddysh or Perbix should also be available to move in order to offset salary and as a roster piece going the other way.

I like Pettersson but Hedman/McDonagh/Moser/Lilleberg is a solid set of 4 LHD. Yes, some guys can play their off-side but it seems TB is a little weaker over there, especially since the best righty is injury prone.

Wouldn't hate it though.

If they were utilizing Moser as LD3, then yes, I'd agree that Pettersson wouldn't be a great add. Since it seems that Moser is going to be RD1 for now (at least the majority of the time it seems), adding a high quality LD seems reasonable. I don't think there are that many RD even out there this deadline that are much of an upgrade (aside from perhaps Rasmus Andersson, who would cost a fortune to acquire).

Coulda woulda shoulda won more cups, who knows? It certainly isn't fact. Coopers got quite the resume, even before he reached the NHL, and then we went on deep playoff runs basically every year until recently.

Let's entertain the idea that Cooper isn't really contributing anything positive and is just holding the roster together that could win on its own, that still makes him Joe Torre-esque.

With all that being said, even Torre was fired. Cooper isn't untouchable, but he deserves credit and a little bit of rope. I think his job is firmly secure until it's time to rebuild, at the very least.

He's not on the hot seat while we are making the playoffs IMO, he's the guy JBB picked.
I never asserted anything as fact in my post so I don't know why you would make that comment. Here's what is a fact though; this team has not managed to win even half of it's games in regulation for three straight seasons now. We have performed as a slightly better than middle of the pack team with what I think most of us agree is a roster that is and has been better than that. And yes, Vasy bears some of that responsibility but so does Coop and yet he seems float above any criticism. That is usually reserved for his assistants, whom he picks. Bizarre.

So yeah, I know that he's not on the hot seat. That's the problem. He should be.

I don't think you were representing it as fact, that is why I said "coulda woulda shoulda".

I am pointing out that since it isn't a fact, which we both agree, that your what if conjecture with respect to other coaches potentially doing a better job could be entertained with some supporting evidence. This is where I think that rabbit hole ends though, because he's had tons of success at basically every level, he's built himself up a robust set of plot armor.
