ABB is a AAAA player, and that's fine. He's still in the best 750 or 1000 hockey players in the world. There's just little job security in it if you want to stay in North America.

It is disappointing there are parts of his game that are good. It can not be said he has not had a chance. Age has got him now his chances in the NHL are done.

He does have some job security though, at least more than lots of players in his position. His AHL production has gotten him one-way pay for the last 3 years. His 3 year Tampa contract was guaranteed 250k in the 1st year then the full 1.5M the following 2 years and his contract with the Canadiens is also one-way, so he's made about 650k a year for the last 4 years, this is more than what he'd make in Europe.

Tampa does reward their leaders in the AHL, they did the same for Conacher paying him a guaranteed 2M over 3 years for what he was doing down in Syracuse.

My perspective is a bit different. When ABB was more of a prospect, there was incentive to find ways to keep him. Now he's 27 and will probably be on one-year contracts for the rest of his career. The AHL also doesn't have many veterans (although he could be one). At some point, he'll be seen as an old guy, taking up a valuable roster spot for a developing player.

He could probably get a pretty good contract in Switzerland.
