Beyond the cap gymnastics it’d require to make Rantanen anything but a rental for TB, I’d worry about the fit. Particularly when it comes to the PP, which is where you maximize the value of a star scoring winger like Rantanen. There’s only one puck and it goes through Kucherov.

I'm still on the Bjorkstrand train for 2RW. He fits well for Tampa and has another year on his deal. If Tampa can get Seattle to retain down to.2.7, all the better, but any retention would be of some.help. Worst case, Tampa acquires him at full price and pays a little less. They could still, in theory, add an additional bottom 6 F as long as some salary went the other way amd/or there was retention.

This we need him. What do you think it takes? We would need to send a cap dump like sheary, atkinson, or glendening? I wonder if they have any interest in something around cap dump player+ one of perbix/lilleberg+pick+prospect.

13.5 AAV is the highest in the league, and you see that as some kind of discount? I'm sure it's possible that is what he's looking for though, might be why Colorado traded him considering Mackinnon makes 12.6.

Honestly I'll bet he's looking for that neighborhood. The rising cap is not lost on the NHLPA. Projections have been up, up, and up. So players aren't just factoring in next year, but rather the next four or five.

Why would he not be a fit? His role on the PP wouldn't be that complicated, Rantanen would replace Hagel, who would no longer have to do double duty on special teams. He can either play the bumper position where his size would be a major asset, or the circle where he'd have one of the best shots on the team.

All the more reason I'd rather go after a star player and find cheaper replacements on the bottom 6.

I'm sure there are teams out there that would pay him whatever he wanted though if that is all he was interested in.

That's my point. You said 13.5 would be crazy. But 13.5 is him taking a discount on comparable contracts.

If Seattle retains max for the remainder of this year and next, it's likely going to require the '26 1st (probably with some protections in place) and a good prospect like Gauthier or Duke I'd guess as the base. Whatever other pieces go back and forth, such as cap dumps, mid to later round picks, lesser roster pieces etc aren't as crucial imo, but unless Tampa makes it worth it for Seattle, they won't have much of a reason to move him.

It won't cost 6 or 7 million for 3rd liners yet, but it wouldn't shock if you see some at that price in a couple years. Tampa added a star player this offseason in Guentzel, and they brought in Moser and McD via trade. The core is set, and now JBB needs to spend assets or cap space to trade or sign good value players to increase depth and give the core it's best shot. If any large amount of cap or futures are used in the next 1-2 years, highest consideration should probably be on a younger, high quality LD to help with the eventual losses of Hedman and McD to the still undefeated opponent that is father time. Spending 13+ on another F cripples the team in that there is no room to address.the.bottom/middle 6 when for.the same space, 2 or 3 good adds could be made throughout the lineup.

Rantanen is a pipe dream, and I seriously hope that, should Carolina shop him, JBB stays far away from paying an exorbitant price for what will be a pure rental. Tampa is not yet in a spot where it's time to empty the cupboards for one last run. With good use of cap space and a few more value trades, plus at least a couple of prospects working out, the window can easily be open for 3 or 4 more years, maybe 5.

Rantanen is obviously not gonna happen. And JBB doesn't go for pure rentals.
Make Buffalo make Tuch available with a very good offer. Get him and we immediately have the best top6 in the league.
Then in the offseason there will still be lot of cap space to retool the bottom six and the 3rd D pair.
