It is a blessing. We were always 1 injury away from a big freefall. Team lacks depth at multiple levels. Rather that injury occur now while we can still shuffle pieces, rather than a week or two from now post-deadline. Like i been preaching the last two weeks, huge sellers market, sell sell sell.

Literally the hockey gods helping our re-tool. Selling was always the right move.

Scooby doo guy rips off the mask of villian

What if the team trying to bring the Schenn brothers together turns out to be us.

That’s a good pickup for 6 weeks that won’t change the future

Does absolutely nothing to help replace Parayko though, waste of assets
Would be installed on the bottom of the depth chart and push everybody up.

I think one way or another we’d probably need to find somebody. Since Luke has a year left after this, the 4th it took to get him is probably a 4th next year if he’s healthy. Due to playing with his brother you might get some extra performance and also it would be way easier to trade two Schenn brothers to a team if you had them both.

No it's not a blessing. But congrats for getting what you wanted I guess

Kyrou ($8.125) + 2025 1st to Buffalo for Tuch ($4.75) & Byram ($3.85)? #HockeyTrade
Hard pass from me. I'd wager that Byram and Tuch will combine for $18M+ against the cap starting in 2026/27, with the potential of that being higher if Byram were to succeed in a PP1 role hear. Byram could very well be worth his next contract, but I'd be very nervous about Tuch quickly declining after signing a 7 or 8 year deal.

I'm not opposed to Kyrou for Byram as the backbone of a deal, but I'm not wild about the 1st and Tuch components of it.

This. Would want other younger pieces coming back instead of Tuch. Buff has a ton of intriguing pieces like Quinn or Helenius.

According to Seravalli Army wants 2 1st round picks or equivalent value for Schenn:

"The prices in St. Louis have been astronomically high, GMs around the league are grumbling. GM Doug Armstrong wants two first-round picks (or equivalents) in exchange for Schenn; that’s the threshold he says is required to ask his captain to waive his full ‘no-trade’ clause. Either Armstrong will have to soften that price, because teams are balking, or Schenn is likely staying put – which is a possibility anyway because Schenn has set down roots in St. Louis."

I wish we were a few years ahead so Marner could be an oprion.

I know there’s a lot of folks that don’t prefer his game, and attitude, and aav, and what the acquisition cost would be. I used to be on the other side of a lot of those issues and I don’t think he’s perfect.

I’m jealous of how consistently he is elite and how much his playstyle elevates anybody who can keep up.

I think the difference for a player in the non tax states is so large that if we experience this change then we will become a place for high value players.

Kyrou being a Toronto native and signed at a cost controlled number would be one of the pieces that would seem to fit well if our timing allowed this type of trade.
I've honestly been chewing on the idea of Marner (or if he gets there Rants) in UFA. We very clearly have a top C in Thomas (When I say top, I mean top 10-15 in the league) - but we don't really have that top winger. Kyrou, Holloway, and Buch are all really really good wingers - but none of them is that gamebreaking elite guy. We have a couple of guys that could become that in Snuggy or Bolduc, but obviously neither is proven. We also don't NEED an elite winger, if we make up for it elsewhere on our roster, but having one sure would be nice.

Marner is kind of a weird fit, since he's more of a playmaker and we need someone who's more of a goal scorer. But we could always run Buch-Thomas-Kyrou and then Holloway-Dvo-Marner.

Either way, I don't think he'd really come here, but if we do make the playoffs this season, and have any sort of success, we have a really clean balance sheet and a pretty enticing group of up-and-coming young players that could be part of a championship core.

I'd say it's still a little early, it would have been perfect if Marner was available in the 2026 off-season, b/c at that point I think we'll have more clarity on Snuggy/Dvo/Bolduc, but guys of Marner's caliber come along so rarely in UFA that if we really do have a chance to go for him we'd need to be seriously considering it - Broberg/Holloway knocked a full year off our retool timeline, Marner would probably move up our contending timeline by another full year.

If we're going to go big game hunting in terms of contract wise, I would almost certainly want to do it on a defenseman vs a winger. That being said, I know top end players rarely become available during UFA so it should be more of a be thankful that you got one situation.

We have the cap structure to be able to do it after next season. There's no doubt a Marner makes the team better, but I would hate if the opportunity arose to cash in on some of our promising forward youngsters for a defenseman we couldn't do it because of the money we already have tied up.

Happy we have Buch long-term but we would've been alot better suited to do something like that if we didn't have Buch under contract for 5 years after this one.

DA isnt a pay one guy 14 milly a year sort of GM. As soon as he would, the next guy up on our roster would ask for more and it sets the bar far too high. Weve had our best teams where we pay a bunch of guys good to great AAVs and have our talent spread out, as opposed to 2 or 3 guys on HUGE contracts. I highly doubt DA sees a fit w/Marner or Rant, and also they would most likely have similar offers from currently more competitive teams.

Yea the issue there is that we'd need to wait until 2027 for Hughes or Makar to get to UFA - until then our best options are Chychrun, Pionk, Ekblad, and Provorov (2025) or Carlson, Ekholm, and Walman (2026). Yeeesh that 2026 UFA D-man group is uuugly.

And ofc I don't think there's a chance in hell either Makar or Hughes gets to UFA. AP was such a unicorn ending up there.
