Do you all expect moves to be made during the break? There is no roster freeze so trades are allowed. There is 12 days off for the tourney followed by 13 more days leading up to the deadline. A lot of GMs can head to the tourney and have some face-to-face convos before the TDL.

The only players we have going are Parayko and Binner, who are not likely to be traded, so there is no worry of distracting them during the event. Trading a player during the break would actually give them a bit of time to make arrangements. Unlike Fowler who played the same day as his flight.

Don’t have a link, but read an article that some pundits were expecting that near the end of the tourney would be treated almost like a deadline. Then the normal TDL a couple weeks later. Wil be interesting to see if it plays out that way.

The bargain bin diving to try and fill out a roster has to stop. This teams future comes from the prospects. Anyone over the age of 27 needs to be sat down and told the new direction and asked to waive any movement clauses. I would like to hold on to Parayko (to mentor defense) but give him the option out if he wants to chase another championship. Kyrou, Broberg, Holloway and Thomas gives us a small core to build upon. Make trades to add depth to our prospect pool with Steen at the reigns. Give him a chance to put his stamp on the future of this team.

I think we're all going to have to wrap our heads around the new economic reality of the NHL.

Basically anyone who's on a multi-year contract today is far more valuable then they were at the beginning of the season with the cap exploding so quickly.

I thought 32 Thoughts was interesting. It sounded like there was some traction on Schenn last year, but Army -really- kept a lid on it. Mentioned Ottawa as a potential suitor, I thought that was surprising, but then again, the whole "Rings in the Room" is a real thing GMs care about and that team is pretty sparse. EF sounded like he was basically just throwing Vegas out there, without any real knowledge, outside of, Schenn played for their GM back in the day and their GM loves him.

I also thought it was interesting that Army has basically said to certain teams, you don't have anything I'm currently looking for. I wonder, in general, what Army is asking for. I'd assume it's younger players/prospects instead of picks, and I'd also assume RHD has to be pretty damn high on the list, if not #1. Would be interesting to hear confirmation of what he thinks our biggest holes are though.

I want nothing from Vegas. The only thing I want from Ottawa is Yakumchuck, and I'm sure that's a non-starter.

I'm not sure if we actually trade Schenn, it sounds like Army is open for business in general, and Schenn is the one that's had the most traction so far. I'm glad Army is asking for a massive return, Schenn is having a solid season and he's a great complimentary player on a Cup team.

Don't bother.
Their prospect pool is empty and they're short on draft picks. Even if they could make the Cap work(theoretically they could), they don't have what it would take to put a worthwhile package together IMO.

LA, on the other hand, could absolutely put a good package together(start with Brandt Clarke); but it would require some Cap gymnastics to make it work.

If you start with Brandt Clarke, LA is hanging up the phone immediately.

It's not just the Cup intangibles. He is physical guy who can play center, play on both special teams, and put up to-something points. With cap exploding, I don't think his contract will scare teams. And on more talented team, he won't be asked to do as much and likely will be more effective. He will be in demand.

I am guessing that if Schenn gets traded it will be more of an Oshie / Brouwer trade.

I hope not and don't think so. If Army trades Schenn he is signaling that he is finally embracing that this core isn't working and steering more towards a youth movement. He isn't targeting another 30yo something piece as his return.

Kind of sort of, but Holloway and Broberg did hit, Holloway even more, Schenn has bounced back reasonably well, and Kyrou has improved his overall game and is less streaky. The miscalculation on this season was Buchnevich failing horribly at C, and then not really returing to old form on the wing, he has a 54 point pace since returning to wing full-time. The other is in net, neither Binnington or Hofer have performed as well as they did last season.

I think a good portion of us expected Buch to fail at C and for the goalies to have some amount of regression, but if Buchnevich was closer to a 65-75 point pace on the wings and the goalies regressed more to above average, instead of average or below average, I do think we'd be in contention for the last wild card spot.

And all that aside, the fact that the team as a whole hasn't been able to string 3 wins together speaks to kind of a broader team issue, and that's probably what Army is most upset at. Playoff teams have to be able to win more than 2 games in a row.

Calgary is in playoff position. Nobody thought they were any good. Canucks have been a tire fire. It's easy to see why Army thinks if we were playing to our expectations we could be right there. We obviously aren't legit contender, but it's not unreasonable to have expected us not to be so crappy.

Perhaps but even as someone who was a huge proponent of the Monty hiring it is and was an extremely flawed team. I think Armstrong is fighting a difficult battle with himself where he wants to define his final legacy as the Blues GM as not being the guy who oversaw the franchise missing the playoffs 4 straight years for the first time in franchise history while also not hamstringing his heir apparent.

I don’t fault the blues group/Armstrong for trying the existing strategy. I like that they tried, brought in Fowler for stability, There are benefits in all outcomes, including one where we fell short. It’s a lot easier to find problems when you stress the system. You’re kind of failing as a manager if you’re aren’t stressing the system.

I think 28 teams understand that McDavid, Eichel, Matthews and MacKinnon are in their prime years. Some understand it better than others. It would be the best outcome probably if we could be the ones sneaking into the playoffs during this time but I think it’s reasonable to say these elite talents will have their moments of championship, it’s a good time to reload, and since we failed, we unlocked the ability to reload a bit more. We will be grateful.

The only teams that are really competitive against the generational talent teams are no state tax teams and Winnipeg because Chevy is a beast. No tax teams won 4 of the last 5 cups. I predict “generational talent” will win 4 of the next 5 - so happens to capture years 27-31 of a lot of these new goats. Expansion plus the pandemic is taking its toll on the talent pool. The great will become greater via dilution. It’s a real steep uphill battle for us to contend at the moment but if we don’t try we won’t be on the path.
