Kind of had a post a day or so about this. With news of significant cap increases in the next few years, contracts like Schenn's no longer have as much negative value. The % of cap will decrease significantly, where during the stagnant cap days, it really didn't change that much.

I think the interesting part is how this impacts upcoming free agents, I think we could see some sign for quite a bit more than they would have the past couple seasons, and that will make comparable vets signed for 2-4 years much more attractive.

With the rising cap and his bounce back year, Schenn is absolutely a positive asset at this point. Return starts with a 1st (or equivalent) and goes up from there. Physical center with Cup experience? Nearly every contender will be interested.

If you or I tell a bank our home is worth $3,000,000 when it’s really only worth $300,000 it is an also felony. But a bank won’t loan us regular people money without an independent appraisal, which is why it rarely happens. It’s not about what the justice system thinks it’s worth, it’s about making knowingly false statements to a lender to induce them to loan you money. If you can independently prove the value there is no crime. Next time, bring proof to court.

The annual salary of our current NHL roster is about $96M. That does not include the $2.5M+ we've already paid Saad, bonuses owed (or potentially already paid) to Suter, or the AHL payroll. The Blues will be paying $100M+ for hockey players this year.

Then you also have salaries for coaches, executives, scouts, accounting, marketing, medical staff, etc.

Then you have utilities, hockey gear, meals, workout equipment, rent/ice fees at Centene, etc.

Then you also foot the bill for road trips. Hotels, chartered flights, per diem, meals, etc.

You are wildly underestimating the operating cost of an NHL team.

It seems like you have put a lot of time into researching this so maybe you know, how does revenue sharing work in the NHL?

What do you mean by bounce back year for Schenn? Offensively he is pacing for exactly the same number of points as last year over 82 games. If you mean he hasn’t been awful defensively like the last two years, then I would agree. But he is still pacing as a minus 9 on the year. So while I agree he has been better (that end of December through mid January he looked pretty good, although that was against some of the worth teams in the league, but good nevertheless), I am not sure I would call it a bounce back year.

If you mean he hasn’t been awful defensively like the last two years, then I would agree. But he is still pacing as a minus 9 on the year. Last year he had a xGF% of 42.40% during 5v5, and this season it's 47.57%. The last time he was around that number was 20-21 with 47%, and in 19-20 was the last time he was better at 49.18%.

Still questions of how much he is driving that number or if it's sustainable for future years, but I'd say he's certainly bounced back to some degree.

I may not have been watching games, but I’ve monitored box scores and could see that the Blues out hit their opponents on a regular basis.

All of this talk about rising cap just reminds me that, no matter what, an individual will spend all the way up to their paycheck.

I get that he paced higher after a poor start but he has fallen off again offensively with 1 point in the last 8 or so. It seems like one of his usual mid season streaks.

He has played better this year than last year. But to me bounced back means returned to normal. That’s why I asked for the definition.

I was trying to pretend to be Toronto, look through their stuff and see what they could afford to lose or what they had to lose for the cap.

I’d imagine we ask for Minten and I don’t think they should do that. I don’t think they would…I guess Schenn has term but still, it’s tough to trade guys like that. I would be surprised if he was in the deal but I dunno.

We’d probably be after the second this year and or first next year.

Other than that I feel they need the defensive prospects they have. I don’t think they have any excess.

I’m guessing reaves would return….but I don’t know that they should trade kampf or jarnkrok. They just got stability on their bottom group for the first time in forever and it seems quick to break it up.

So maybe max domi is ejected I dunno. He seems to be on a deal that’s very manageable for Toronto. He’s got a lot of years…I could understand Toronto thinking it was upgrading this spot with Schenn but I think we have to retain and we don’t do that often, plus that dude has lotsa years…

I don’t see the deal. Unless there is some behind the scenes deal with Tavares where they’re both happy with some change … I so very highly doubt that but I guess when Matthew’s took the C Tavares could have asked to move. It isn’t the craziest idea but it’s way out there in terms of random guess. And I even more highly doubt we’d ever be involved with Marner; he seems suited for a large market.
