2024-2025 Blues Multi-Purpose Thread.

How does everyone see the goaltender situation playing out over the next two seasons? With Hofer being arbitration eligible and a potential offer sheet candidate, what would the Blues do if Hofer signed an offer sheet at or under the 2nd round compensation tier (anywhere from 2 to 5 years at 4.6M per)? I think the Blues would almost certainly match anything up to that salary regardless of the length of term. If it goes to the next compensation tier, (1st and 3rd), they probably take the offer sheet compensation, right?

There is also the Binnington aspect to consider, who will be 32 going into next season and will be 34 going into the 27/28 season as a UFA. Does it make sense to sign Binnington to an extension and let him finish his career as a Blue? I could see a 2-3 year extension, regardless of what happens with Hofer, so long as the price tag isn't significantly higher than his current AAV.

I would assume the plan is to ride it out with Binny/Hofer for at least the next season, then re-evaluate where they both are and where Ellis is and decide then. It will be interesting to see what kind of deal Hofer gets, I would think Army would get that done before someone can sign him to an OS but you never know. 4.6 seems pretty rich for him at this point so it brings up an interesting question, that honestly I am not sure I would match something like 4/5 years at 4.6, could end up being a steal or could end up being an albatross just as easily especially if you are wanting to re-sign Binnington. Knowing Army though I would bet on him getting him re-signed to something reasonable before that could become an issue.

Hofer at 4.6M puts our cap allocation to goaltender at 11M or 11.5% of the cap which is on the higher side but still manageable. Agree that Army is likely to get this figured out but July 1 is approaching quick. I could see teams having interest in Hofer at the higher AAV given his overall body of work. Not sure how arbitration would look if he filed.

Using Husso as the case study, 3 year ELC to 1-year bridge deal to 2 year extension that walked him to UFA where his salary jumped from near league minimum to 4.75M.

Hofer is coming off a 2-year extension after his 3-year ELC. However, Hofer will not become a UFA until 2028/2029.

I was trying to extrapolate Bennett's next contract. Using Brayden Schenn as a comp for Bennett (physical, 50-60 point, 2-way center), Schenn signed an 8 year extension at 28 at 6.5M (7.98% of the cap). Adjusting Bennett to 95.5M cap and accounting for 7 years, somewhere between 7.6M and 8.7M for 7 years is probably the floor of what he will get.

Stephenson and Lindholm signed 7-year deals last July for 7.1% and 8.8% of cap, respectively.

In a bidding war, I could easily see Bennett eclipse 9M-10M on AAV. GMs are pretty shrewd around the league but the cap is expected to continue to increase in the short-term.

If all it costs the Blue is cap space, adding Bennett for 7 years at ~8M is something I would consider if I were Army especially if Holloway and Broberg are extended prior to 7/1 and we know what the cap allocations look like 2-3 years out.

I would not want to sign him to a deal like that, I am not confident that the Bennett we have seen the last couple years in Florida is the same Bennett that we would get for the next 7 years. Players who play like he does usually drop off a cliff right around age 30/31/32, considering he will be 29 when that contract starts it would be awfully risky. Maybe I'm wrong and he continues his level of play for another 4-5 years but I wouldn't bet on it.

I've said this for awhile, a lot of our fans hate him due to the history but I would take him on the Blues no doubt
I've been critical of the prospect of signing Bennett, but it has less to do with his cheap shots and more to do with the term he'll likely demand and how he will age. To be clear, I don't hate him. He's a hell of a hockey player. My issue with his play is that invites the same head hunting and shots at our top guys. I mentioned all of this in another post I made regarding Bennett the other day, all of which points were conveniently glossed over by another poster who preferred to call the apprehension in signing him "Moral Grandstanding" My opinion on the head hunting aspect of the game has changed, as there is no longer an enforcer roll to maintain checks and balances. I'd prefer to not lose Thomas, Broberg, Kyrou, Holloway, Bolduc or Snuggy to a concussion for an undisclosed amount of time in the middle of the season due to some half assed retribution from a game the week before. But what do I know?? I'm just a virtue signaler..

I'm not sure if you quoted the wrong post but I'm not really sure what that has to do with what I said lol. We were talking about Kadri.

After re-reading that string of posts, I couldn't tell who we were talking about. I specified that I'd take Kadri (out back to the shed), but not Bennett or EP. Not sure if Xerloris replied to my post with Bennett in mind or Kadri. Funny.

I would be absolutely floored if Bennett exceeds 8 million per. He just doesn’t have the offense to generate that kind of salary.

Yeah that's my bad lol. I didn't mean to direct reply to you but rather continue the above mention of Bennett.
