Prosvetov may well have a point about the coaching - I have no idea what coaching sports is like, and trying to communicate/translate theory to practice is always difficult, never mind for a position as complex as a hockey goalie.

I have one or two issues with this section however

That’ a typical russian mentality. Can’t take blame at all, doesn’t listen to a person without high authority and in this case the authority would be achieved with playing background and blatantly lies like mentioned above.

I think we can question Parkkila's recent work for sure, but to say he's a trash coach doesn't really cut it for me. He has had good results with mediocre goalies here, and see those same goalies crash and burn elsewhere besides Varlamov.

Well, Prosvetov is right in that it's weird that Parkkila never actually played hockey. It's not completely unheard of, but it's rare.
And while I don't believe a coach (in any sport) needs to have actually played in order to develop strategies and techniques, that gets a little fuzzy when it comes to a goalie coach.

At any rate, Prosvetov isn't the authority I'm looking for when it comes to Avalanche goaltending decisions.
Parkkila was a goaltender until 18. Maybe not at a great level but it's not like he never saw ice before.

The Athletic article on Parkkila is a good story:

I get that you don't like that brand of hockey but if you look at their roster that's exactly what they should do if they want to have a chance to win.
Patrick Kane will check about as well as Maurice Richard would, and Maurice Richard is dead.

FTR I may despise McLellan’s brand of hockey but I don’t think he’s a terrible coach. Overrated, yes, but not terrible. Yzerman probably made the only hire he could now that his own job may very well be in jeopardy.

Don't believe Jon Cooper or Bob Hartley played hockey
Hartley did. He was a goalie. Just not at the NHL level.

Cooper was an accomplished lacrosse player.

It's completely irrelevant anyway. A goalie coach is closer to a conditionning coach or a skating coach than a head coach.

Head coach who never played is no big deal. Goalie coach who was never a goalie I could see why it could be a problem for some. Same as a skating coach who never skated.

If they’re good at what they do it probably doesn’t matter in the end how they got there.

He played goalie, so it’s not a thing he doesn’t understand. Unless we want to start arguing that you not only need to play goalie but reach a certain level and what kind of success you had and in what leagues and then we need to cross reference that against all other NHL goalie coaches ever with the same criteria and this is how HF Boards debates work.

For some reason I got McLellan and Dave Tippet mixed in my head. I was thinking of Tippett when I questioned if this was a good move over Lalonde. I was thinking of how Tippett absolutely hated young players in Arizona. Like he chased them out of the organization with glee.

Didn't mean to give McLellan that bad ju-ju.
I'm curious, who did he chase off?

I honestly can't remember if McLellan likes young players or not. If he truly is a Babcock disciple, then he f***ing despises them.

Exactly. Can't make chicken soup outta chicken shit. Both Georgiev and Annunen are bad goalies. Full stop. I'm willing to give Parkkila the benefit of the doubt as I don't think any other goalie coach could've gotten much more out of Kuemper, Francouz, Grubauer, and Varlamov.

Maybe something goes awry, I don't know, but so far the Woodshed has gotten off to a great start.

So you have your answer.

Sounds like it worked for Kempe who became a really, really good player.

Didn't Tippett clash majorly with Kyle Turris?
Oh...well, Turris clashed with the Senators about as bad if not worse, got traded to Nashville, then promptly imploded. IIRC Tippett got as much as he possibly could from a bad roster. He had them playing a trap style even though he later said that's not really his preferred scheme.

IIRC Arizona had a penchant for running off young talent even before Tippett showed up. Lest we forget them gutting their roster by booting a young Ladislav Nagy and Michal Handzus for Brian frickin' Boucher. Their chronically drunk head coach at the time inexplicably drove off Danny Briere too.

I actually like Tippett. Very blunt and matter-of-fact at his pressers. He didn't hesitate to eviscerate Marty Turco if he had a really awful performance, but he also defended him, in that one Stars playoff loss to the Avs, everyone wanted to pile on Turco but he astutely pointed out the only guy to put up more than one goal was Chris Therrien (at least that's what I remember). Not sure why they keep recycling other coaches and not him--certainly not his fault the Oilers saddled him with absolute horseshit goaltending.

Sure, okay. Guess we'll see what he does in Detroit, though it ain't like there's a plethora of youngsters itching to make the jump.

I'm pretty sure everything rides on Cossa now. He HAS to pan out now that every other goalie Yzerman went out and got has crashed and burned.
