We all talk about the tax situation but rarely mention the actual numbers involved. I decide to try and look it up and found a great source on the CPA Practice Advisor website.

Lowest Tax Burden by States (with NHL teams) Florida (6.05%) < Tennessee (6.07%) < Nevada (7.37%) < Texas (7.56%) < North Carolina (7.89%) < Michigan (8.02%) < Washington (8.04%) < Pennsylvania (8.36%) < Colorado (8.42%) < Massachusetts (8.55%) < Ohio (8.92%) < Utah (9.35%) < New Jersey (9.47%) < Minnesota (9.95%) < California (10.40%) < New York (12.02%).

I really couldn't find an equivalent report for Canadian provinces. These numbers I used above are the combination of an individuals State Property Tax Burden, Individual State Income Tax Burden, and State Sales & Excise Tax Burden.

But for what it is worth I have read articles by both Canadian as well as US Accountants who say when you are making the kind of money these guys are making, you can set yourself up with investments, retirements accounts, etc... where these tax rates, and even the highest ones in Canada (they specifically mentioned Montreal for what it's worth) can be essentially negated.

Also, every single player will have a different price they are willing to pay to play in a market they really feel at home in. Some will want to find the way to cash in as much as they absolutely can, knowing their career spans are much shorter in the NHL (5.5 years) than most other people's jobs, except NHL coaches... those bums can't maintain a job for more than 2.2 years on average.

I am not an accountant but isn't it calculated by the team that's paying you not where you live? I remember Derek Jeter was in hot water years ago because he claimed to have live in Florida but played for Yankees. He was trying to avoid New York taxes.

Google it. Tons of articles.
The issue with that was that he was claiming to live in Florida while actually staying in New York while collecting the pay cheque. Matthews is not like this. He's an Arizona citizen when he gets paid 95% of his money.

Stevie confuses me. Why did he look so damn good in Tampa but not Detroit? From what I read, he brought quite a few of the Tampa Bay folks with him. Anyways, whenever I watch them play and I look at that roster, I have no idea what Detroit's gameplan is. I'm not sure they have one right now.

We've always known Avalanche hockey is supposed to be up-tempo, breaks, rushes, and waves of attackers and entirely, way, way, way too much overpassing. But what is Detroit hockey? What is Steve trying to build? It just makes no sense.
The Wings IMO have traditionally been somewhat akin to those really good Kings teams of the early 2010s, a slower team that plays well defensively and produces offense through pinpoint passing. I imagine that was the goal in Tampa as well but I felt like those Bolts teams had some pretty good wheels on them too.

I assume that’s what Yzerman is going for in Detroit as well, but it just isn’t coming together. Bad signings, lack of development, and (possibly) bad coaching have severely hampered his efforts. Also, I think he came into a much better situation personnel-wise in Tampa as opposed to Detroit (St. Louis, Stamkos, and Hedman were already there) and he knocked it out of the park with the hire and promotion of Jon Cooper (Cooper was hired in Syracuse in 2010 so I don’t know if that part of it was Yzerman or not).

I need a gif of Bednar on stage smoking a cigar with *Since 2016 bitches* on it to reply properly to that last point.

For signing bonuses you would get taxed where you live I’m pretty sure. But you get taxed in the states you play as well.

I'll take "How to get blackballed from the NHL for 500" Alex
Oh he had no chance of coming back anyhow interview or not.

He sucked in the NHL so he's gotta find reasons WHY he sucked...it certainly couldn't be HIS fault. No that would be crazy...

The Wings complete the next to last step in a failed rebuild: hiring a retread coach to try to save a season in which they are unintentionally tanking. The only thing left to do is fire the GM and trade everyone in 12-18 months.

Todd McLellan is the king of trap, slog, clog up everything hockey.

I'm sure Patrick Kane and Lucas Raymond are going to LOVE playing for this dork.

There's a reason he can't win it all.
THIS.

He’s just Mike Babcock-lite (minus the creepy phone snooping). He’s good in that he’s one of those quick-fix coaches who gets immediate results by turning a hockey game into a C-SPAN broadcast. But eventually (like a lot of quick-fixers) his charges tire of his tactics and he loses the room.

One thing I’ve never understood is that McLellan has gotten more chances than Norv f***ing Turner and yet the other Babcock disciple, Paul MacLean, won a goddamn Adams, and never got another HC job again.

He's recognized as one of the best X's and O's coach in the game.

Why would he quickly lose the room? That's a weird stance considering he spent 7 seasons in SJ, 3.5 in Edmonton (that org back then was a shitshow) and nearly 5 full seasons with the Kings. He's no Gerard Gallant.

Also the Wings pretty much only have a chance to win by playing a tight defensive game. They sure aren't winning a run and gun contest with that roster.

He's a great hire for them (Yzerman's best move since reaching for Seider at the draft) but a few months too soon.

He’s a desperation hire IMO, rumors abounded Montgomery was the guy Yzerman he really wanted (not that I think he would’ve fixed things either).

We will see, the game was different when he was first in charge in SJ, I don’t think his style is nearly as successful in today’s NHL (much like his mentor, Babs).

In the meantime, can’t wait for the Wings to hack, slash, hook, clutch, grab, obstruct, and slog their way through games to try and save their season.

I get that you don't like that brand of hockey but if you look at their roster that's exactly what they should do if they want to have a chance to win.

For some reason I got McLellan and Dave Tippet mixed in my head. I was thinking of Tippett when I questioned if this was a good move over Lalonde. I was thinking of how Tippett absolutely hated young players in Arizona. Like he chased them out of the organization with glee.

Didn't mean to give McLellan that bad ju-ju.

Well, Prosvetov is right in that it's weird that Parkkila never actually played hockey. It's not completely unheard of, but it's rare.
And while I don't believe a coach (in any sport) needs to have actually played in order to develop strategies and techniques, that gets a little fuzzy when it comes to a goalie coach.

At any rate, Prosvetov isn't the authority I'm looking for when it comes to Avalanche goaltending decisions.

I've never been a big fan of Hockey Patton Oswald. But I am always okay with Detroit sucking. Even if the rivalry has been over for more than a decade.

Prosvetov may well have a point about the coaching - I have no idea what coaching sports is like, and trying to communicate/translate theory to practice is always difficult, never mind for a position as complex as a hockey goalie.

I have one or two issues with this section however

This is the cartwheel guy, right? Sure doesn’t lack confidence in himself, but these salty takes are the verbal equivalent of doing a cartwheel in full goalie gear.

Has anyone seen this? Georgiev mentally strong is something I never thought I would see

Good lord.

Buddy was a waiver claim, played mostly awful, and wonders why he's in Russia now.
He also doesn't remember that it wasn't 3 goals he allowed before getting pulled, it was 4 goals on 13 shots. The team had just clawed their way back from the 3-0 deficit he put them in, only for him to allow OEL to beat him from the point with a floater.

In the long line of bad goalies this Franchise has had, he fits right in among them.
