Xenforo Cloud is doing server maintenance Thurdsay 13th at 9 AM GMT. Downtime is to be expected during the process. Server changes were implemented recently to cope with the traffic surge last week. Conor McGahey brought up 1-16 seeding for the NHL playoffs. Before you jump allover him, he wants the NHL to go back to the 1-8 in each conference, but just suggested 1-16 as a crazy idea. Anyway, if that were to happen as the points are today, the Avs would open the playoffs vs. Tampa Bay.
IDK what would be worse? Dallas or Tampa in round 1?
There would be some interesting matchups in that scenario...
Edmonton vs Toronto
Minnesota vs Carolina might set time back 40 years.
LA vs Florida. Cross country travel in round 1?
NJ vs. Vegas as well.
If it was 1-8 per conference, the Avs would face Edmonton in round 1.

They would NEVER allow 1-16 but I would love eradicating divisions and just making the league have two conferences. At this point there are so many teams that in order to even have a balanced schedule the Avs are barely playing their division rivals more than they are other teams, so it really wouldn't make much difference. The travel costs the league is so concerned about, which led to this stupid division-centric first round to begin with, aren't that much more substantial if they just went 1-8.
The radically realigned league they had the one post-pandemic year was kinda fun, though I would never want another all-Canadian division ever again.

His third point is something I’ve been saying for years, that or a shot clock. OT has become so damn boring and the puck possession, go from O zone to D zone crap is awful
Sadly...I think you're right.
He isn't whistling for guys to get off the ice anymore, is he? I guess EJ in particular haaaaaaated that.

Actually now that you say it he has kinda lost his passion hey? That was the one thing that did set him apart. I thought his tactics sucked but maybe he’s lost his fire?
That was honestly one of the worst possible situations for him to take. I don’t blame him for taking it though. A roster full of a big, slow, talentless grinders. Really good goaltending tandem, albeit very injury prone.
Lamoriello needs to retire, he’s never known how to operate in the cap era. Still making the same mistakes he made in NJ and Toronto.

What can the league do about Buffalo? Is there anything to do with that franchise?
Unfortunately no. You know what’s sad, compared to Rigas and Golisano, Pegula is the best owner they’ve had in the last 30+ years.
In order to force an owner out there has to be extraordinary circumstances. The last owners I can remember being forced out are Dan Snyder and whoever that guy was in Carolina, Donald Sterling with the Clippers, the guy who owned the Dodgers and let the team get sucked into his divorce drama, and of course, Alex Meruelo. And even with Meruelo, remember they had to make promises in order to avoid legal action.
Similar situation with Meruelo as well since Pegula owns the Sabres and the Amerks. Not to mention he’s also the owner of the Bills. It’d be hard to divest him from those franchises even if he did something egregious enough to be kicked out.
There's really nothing for the league to do. Their ownership is the one that needs to take a long look in the mirror and decide what to do.

Along with that, you have to think the fatter markets like Atlanta and Houston are earmarked for the leagues expansion fee pyramid scheme.
A place like Hamilton Ontario maybe? But like you say, it’s not like the league can unilaterally decide this.
When Canadian fans say things like this, you wonder if the wheels are turning to create an impetus to put a team in Quebec. The problem is, as it is with the Yeti, the Avs still have copyrights. Otherwise, I wouldn’t hate a Hartford Whalers reboot but it’s the same issue with Carolina. Transacting concessions of these rights seems more realistic with Hartford since they were kind of dire when the move to Carolina occurred. The Nordiques transitioning to the Avs involve much more history that Colorado would be less eager to concede to a Nordiques part 2.

The funny thing is the Pegula hires “football guys” to run the Bills because he doesn’t know much about football and the team has been quite successful. But because he thinks he’s a hockey guy he likes to meddle quite a bit in the Sabres org… And well clearly he doesn’t have much self awareness.
Pretty sure I read the GM of the Bills has it written in his contract that Pegula cannot interfere with his job. Obviously that ain’t the case with Kevyn Adams.
