What's currently happening in the KHL with Demidov isn't good.

They don't play him anymore because he refuses to re-up in the KHL...and now the word out there is they want him to sign a new contract so they can do like they did with Michkov last year and force the NHL team to pay them to release the player from his contract.

The Flyers may have created a precedent here.
I think its fair game, it happens all the damn time in futbol. Why would they want to lose an amazing player on a free when they can get 1 to 10 million or whatever it is.

If they want to get something, they should negotiate a transfer agreement like every other Euro pro league. This is not only blatant extortion, but they are spiting a young future superstar who has done nothing wrong in the process. Demidov wants to play in the NHL next season, as is his right when his contract expires. It's despicable that his club is punishing him for playing by the rules.

Those fees for the transfer agreement leagues like SHL, DEL, Liiga, etc. are around 60k to 80k, super minimum. Demidov is at least worth 5 to 10 million to SKA. Think about how much income he will bring the Habs with jersey sales alone? Why would they want to or need to cater to the NHL's minimum value?

Well, if they don't think those terms are acceptable, that's their business. But that isn't Demidov's fault, why bully him into being part of their shitty extortion scheme?

They're doing what's best for their team/business. Ivan was always going to leave the KHL in 5 or less years, they don't need to hold him to any respect whatsoever. He's not going to be a legend for them, he has the potential to be for the Habs.

AKA "I don't remember the Vegas and the Dallas series but this is what I think happened"

Nope. Wasn't injuries. Wasn't goaltending. It was coaching.
I don’t agree with that entirely. You can’t sit here and say injuries didn’t play a part.

And the goalies for the Avs in those series were Grubauer, Grubauer, and Georgiev (IIRC). Like f*** goaltending didn’t play a part in that. Bednar had the inferior goalie by far in all of those matchups. Georgiev especially.

Not going to sit here and say DeBoer wasn’t the better coach in these contests but to say it’s just coaching is ridiculous.

May have another situation like they had with Malkin back in the day when they basically snuck him out of Russia.

Yeah, but part of me also says f*** that noise. If I was 18-21 and had dreams of winnning a Stanley Cup and making millions in the NHL... why not just hop the night train to west Berlin and then get a flight to North America?

Feels like we are going back in time to the cold war here.

That does not in any way, shape, or form make it moral.

Actually, not a bad idea. Break his contract and just leave the country. He doesn't owe them his loyalty if they're going to hold him hostage against his will for money.

Fair? What do you mean lose a player?

They don't own the player's rights if he isn't under contract and you can't "lose" something you don't have.

That's extorsion, pure and simple.

That’s a lie. The compensation is 285K USD when player transfers to the NHL and on top of that first round pick’s team is paid 35k and picks from the other rounds net 20k for the team where they were drafted from.
