Sounds like he's protecting himself from libel. It seems to me he doesn't want to risk getting sued

Can see this in general but do find it a little odd in this context. The statements coming directly from them suggest that the Bruins were pissed. It was odd right from the start that they were the ones that announced McAvoy’s tournament was done
I can’t remember ever seeing a statement from a team doctor that seems to take a shot at another doctor’s care before. The implication is clearly there that it was the US team medical staff’s treatment that lead to the infection
Yeah it doesn't take an insider to see they're pissed. I also don't think it's unheard of to say that McAvoy clearly got hurt in the first game or whatever, and standard procedure in those cases is a shot to take down any inflammation/pain. There are things I don't love about Friedman's coverage, and as has been pointed out before, the 32 Thoughts column/show does tend to have him speculate waaaaaaay more than he used to, but I just don't think he's out of bounds in this instance.
A lot of people are misinterpreting..."having a meeting" to "expansion team four years from now." There has been an investment team that has wanted an NHL team in NOLA for the past twenty years. And there is no way, I mean NO WAY that NOLA is getting a team.

Quebec City has been "having meetings" with the NHL for years now. Obviously, nothing has actually happened, and I think it's WAY more likely that Quebec City gets a team than New Orleans. That is to say: never happening.

Which I don't really get, because he makes it very clear when he's speculating, and when he's basing things off what he heard. He's transparent when he doesn't have 100% of the info, and he's very precise with his language.
Even in that video he emphasizes that, "it seems like..." and "it sounds like....I don't know exactly what happened" and "from what I understand..." and "I don't know if he was given a needle or something like that, or a shot or something like that, and it got infected, but it was something along these lines."
That to me sounds like he has a pretty good idea what happened, but wants to be clear with his audience that he doesn't have all the facts. It tells me that Elliotte is trying to be professional, and that he cares about not misleading his audience.
That's enough for me to get a read on how likely what he says is true, and it sounds to me like the key parts of it probably are.
As opposed to someone like Seravalli who's so motivated by self interest, he'll jump the gun and report very matter of factly that Kotkaniemi has been traded to the Avs, because he wants to be first. He deleted the tweet so I can't verify, but I don't think he used anything like the kind of careful language Elliotte uses.
Elliotte is paid big bucks now, and along with that, comes Sportsnet wanting him to speculate a bit more, and talk more about what he hears, rather than just what he knows, because that's what fans want. They want gossip and rumors.
I'm sure fans would rather know this information about McAvoy than not know it, and I thought he used the proper language to convey to fans what he heard.

Yeah I'm totally with you. Everyone complains about how Friedge speculates more now, which he does objectively, but its always very clear when he's speculating vs reporting. Maybe the speculating is annoying to some, but at least he's clear when he does it and it's usually informed speculation imo.

I get what you are saying. You are right, as I pointed out earlier, he said "It sounds like... I don't know if he got a shot or something, I don't know exactly what happened." But then he continued to speculate for the entire episode. The vast majority of what he says is speculation which makes it harder and harder to take his "information" on face value.
Does he want to be a journalist or a dear abby advice column? The way I look at it, you either deal in information or you deal in speculation, but it is impossible to do both honestly.

This is such a random post I had to look up who was in that class and this is a more accurate assessment than expected. Favourite player of wives all over BC, Boeser, is a pretty big omission though
