Prospect Info: 2024 156 Oa RW Justin Poirier

Some rumors swirling that Poirier might end up at the University of Maine this season.

Would be a great landing spot as the Black Bears graduated/portal'd a lot of talent from last year's team. Some prime minutes available for him if he makes it here to Orono. I have no doubt he would thrive in the system Ben Barr likes to play.

Do we have him signed to his EL yet? If not, curious as to if it goes by CHL draft rules or NCAA. Could be a loophole for some players to go to go to their preferred team (not necessarily him btw)

ya know this is a good question. The reverse Mike Van Ryn. No idea what the rules would be on this other than if his eligibility is handled like normal we'd have to sign him after his season ends at Maine this year.

The assumption is that Poirier's rights will extend to 4 years removed from his draft year. Thus you'd keep his rights until August 15 2028 at minimum. But I believe this is still being finalized in the new/revised CBA.

I think the NCAA is a great place for Poirier. He'll play against bigger and older players. I expect his production will go down significantly but it will be worth it for his career. Great next step as he's not yet ready to be an AHL player.
Yea I was just thinking, the Q is too easy for him at this point (and it's probably the worst of the 3 CHL junior leagues), nothing to be gained by staying there. Playing against higher quality opponents who are bigger, older, and play a different style of hockey can only help is growth/development. Better he hit a wall now and grow and develop through it than when he's 20-21 in the AHL getting destroyed.

True - he may become just a PPG player instead of a 1.5p/g player....

Joking aside, I agree this a good move and into a good system for a player with his skills based on Nadeau year in the same program. He has nothing left to prove in the Q and will only be a target for those trying to make a name for themselves by trying to take him out.

Has anyone seen the answer to whether players that make the jump to the NCAA are held to their original team control draft result or once they move to the ncaa it’s now that pathway for team control?
