Prospect Info: [2024 - 130th] Tyler Thorpe (RW) - Vancouver Giants (WHL)

Giants were down 3-0 on 3 shots after the first 6 minutes of the game (yes, the goalie did get pulled at that point). Down 4-1 after the first period and 5-1 at the worst point.

Then came the comeback which Thorpe started by scoring the Giants' 2nd goal and capped with a sweet tip to notch the 6-6 tying goal.

They're 11 seconds away from heading to a shootout with the Giants having just taken an interference penalty to give Victoria one last chance to stem the bleeding. EDIT: yep, shootout time.

Has Leslie improved his d, or does he still suck ass at that aspect ?

I was surprised he went undrafred after being a RHD listed at 6'1 and put up 50 points.

He's not terrible. He also generally gets the big assignments and they trust him with 16-year-old rookie Ryan Lin (who looks great.)

I'm not gonna call him a "good" defender, but at least to my amateur sensibilities he doesn't seem terrible. He's basically a PPG scorer this season and is the team captain so he's doing something right.

Also not really related to this but the Giants had a Star Wars night last weekend and wore jerseys done up to look like Stormtrooper armor. They're available for auction now:

You can bid on Thorpe's which is at $220 at the moment, but given that the high bidder is named as Ron Thorpe it would appear you'd be bidding against his dad or grandpa and that might be bad karma

Thorpe looks like he’s improved his skating a decent amount this season as well, especially his top end speed.

I didn't see him last year but if this year is improvement then he must have looked terrible as he's got some of the heaviest feet I can recall, needs a lot of work still on the skating and speed. That shot is impressive though.

Oh no doubt his agility and acceleration are well below average, his top speed (when he gets there) is improved

Thorpe is really the wild card to look at in coming years, from what I've been reading up on the youngster.

for me he's a long shot until his feet get much better, a good gamble for a 5th rounder as he's tall and has a wicked shot. I was much more impressed last year with Xhekaj and think fans are sleeping on him. I said I thought Xhekaj would be in the AHL this year but with Thorpe I would lean on sending him back to the dub next year as an overager unless they want to go the NCAA route as that would be very interesting now that it's an option.

NCAA with Hage!

A lighter schedule might be perfect for him to fix skating techniques and get stronger in the gym. Down side is no fighting but I don't care about that as much.

He got a contract quick for a 5th round pick.
They are probably aware that his offensive game has a ceiling for the WHL and it was pointless to keep him there hoping he’d find another level. Now it’s to hone the physical and defensive skills in the AHL for a couple of years where he can define himself as a good future bottom-6 player.

Is Thorpe even allowed in the AHL next year? Doesn't he need to play another year in the CHL?

He's still very much just a giant, overgrown teenager right now. I'm guessing they'll work on his conditioning a ton this off-season, get him fitter and stronger, lots of guided gym work. I want him to turn into a physical beast.
it took 10 years to get Chara to a point where he didn't appear to have 8 mental/physical disabilities. If they can do it with that giant turd, Thorpedo should be easy

With our development team coaches and all the effort the organization has put into helping prospects develop either at the gym or as a person, I think this kid can become our next surprise after Xhekaj and Davidson!

This kid looks like someone who will be mean and tough to play against.

Is it because of his acne?

Everyone knows bigger dudes take longer to develop yet no one seems to be willing to make allowances for that.
