When we analyse a draft, it's always about what our players are doing....vs..what other players should have been taken. Hindisght or not.
I will agree that needless to say, the 1st round could not hvae been better as evaluated right now. But....so much could have been done in the 2nd day. And OBVIOUSLY their values are not the same whether it's 3rd or 6th round. For example, Merrill is not doing good. Same for Khanin. Though I'll say this, in the 6th round, fine with me to take a specimen like Merrill. And he will do better year 2. For Khanin, I guess it was impossible to know based on his stats that the kid seemed to have reached a plateau already. But that's like to be another Trunev.
Thorpe for me is a dissapointment. As we see year in year out...a big body like that should be able to surf on that alone. Right now he's slightly ahead of last year but not that much. You have to hope that he concentrates on working on his speed to ever make it. But personnally, and it's the same with Vecvanags, I just had so many other names ahead of him. Colton Roberts on D though a ceiling not that high. Or....Luke Misa on talent alone. Poirier even if he would end up a Laval star.....I think we could have done much better in that round. BUT a big body that improves...it's not a big guess to take.
My issues with Protz-Sawyer-Koivu is the lack of a possible high ceiling. Maybe Sawyer has the best of them all in my opinion. But for those 3, for me, it's not entirely based on their own season rather than who I would have picked too. Needless to say I had none on my list. Ziemer, Mews, Protas, Wetsch, Marques...MY BOY MATEIKO, Mr. Pronoun Kevin He.....
I think we could have done much better...but we will know that in 5 years.
As far as what our boys are doing....round 1 is set, game and match. The rest....right now it's Thorpe, Protz and Bergqvist....I just believe right now, there's no steal at all in that 2nd day.
